Contest: Deadline 19 March 2007

The Public Policy Research Center at UMSL invites submissions for the Irvin Schankman Memorial Photography Contest.

Any photo of St. Louis, its people and its places, taken within the last fifty years is eligible. Finalists will be selected by a blind jury, and the three top photo winners will receive prizes in the amounts of $1000, $500 and $250 dollars. An exhibition of photographs by five to ten finalist selected from all entries will be on view at Gallery 210 at UMSL from June 28 thru October 16, 2007. .

The contest was initiated by the Schankman family to honor the memory of Irvin Schankman (1924-2004), a professional photographer and the founder of Allied Photocolor and Imaging Center. Schankman’s dedication to documenting St. Louis began when he picked up his first camera in 6th grade. In his junior year of high school he made his way through police lines to shoot a blazing gasoline storage facility. These photographs, which appeared in St. Louis’ Star Times as dramatic silhouettes, marked the beginning of his career.

For information on submitting photos, click here. Submission deadline is March 19, 2007.

The contest is sponsored by the Public Policy Research Center Photography Project, the Schankman Family, Gallery 210 at the University of Missouri St. Louis, and Allied Photocolor.

Call for Work: Deadline 5 February 2007

Artists are invited to submit three works each in any medium or mixed media for exhibit at the NueVue show, which opens February 9 at Art Coop.

For works submitted to be hung on the wall, each artist is limited to approximately 6' feet of horizontal wall space. Exceptions will be made for large works where necessary.

For large sculpture, freestanding installations or performance work, floor to 16' ceiling space will be available as required by the work.

There is a $20 entry fee per artist (not per work), payable on installation of your work. Each artist must also bring $5 worth of home made or store bought food or drink of any sort for our guests at the opening reception. Exhibition is limited to the first 33 artists accepted

Deadline for received submissions is February 5th. But don't delay submitting. Submissions will be reviewed as received and accepted or rejected only until we have 33 artists accepted. 9 artist slots are already filled.

Preferred submission is by emailing JPGs of your work or give us a website address where we can see your work. Alternatively, slides may be snail mailed to: Art Coop, 2400 South Jefferson, St. Louis, MO 63104. They cannot be returned unless a postage paid self-addressed envelope is
included.

If you exhibited at Art Coop during the early days on Washington Avenue, feel welcome to call or email me and we probably won't need to see your current work before accepting you for this show.

For installations or performance work, a written description by email is acceptable. Diagrams, drawings or photos of the proposed work or previous work by you would be helpful.

Changing Ideas

I've just learned of a group that works to link photographers to nonprofits for the benefit of both. While they are not currently accepting applications, this might be something to keep an eye on if their purpose interests you.

Changing Ideas was established by David Graham who, as a consequence of his 23 year old son becoming paralysed in a diving accident, changed careers and undertook an MA in photojournalism. With his business background he recognised that many concerned organizations and individuals were frequently unable to successfully realise their humanitarian projects because they lacked essential business skills and other resources. He saw there was a gap in the humanitarian sector for an organization that brought concerned organizations and individuals together within a framework that provided the necessary skills to turn their ideas into reality.

We have seen that many photojournalists want to make a difference but don't know how and many charities also fail to fully achieve their humanitarian objectives. Our experience has shown that change can be effectively achieved by applying business thinking combined with visual imagery to humanitarian campaigns.

Essentially this charity operates in a similar way to an incubator within the business community. We provide support that includes media expertise, contacts and finance to ensure that selected humanitarian projects are more likely to fulfill their potential and effect tangible and measurable change.

We assist charities and other individuals, including photographers and journalists, by providing effective, practical and pragmatic support to achieve lasting, effective and above all measurable change.

Important: Getting your Webster refund

As student refunds are being processed through HigherOne for the first time this term, you are encourag to activate your Webster Debit Card and indicate your refund preference. It would help you avoid a lot of confusion and frustration. They have been advertising this information through Connections and the University web page for several months now, however the vast majority of students who will be eligible for refunds have not yet logged on and indicated their refund preference. These students WILL NOT be able to access their refund until they complete this process.

There is an FAQ sheet that downloads via a link from "In the Spotlight" on the home page of the University web site, as well as from the Registration and Services Online page. This will probably answer most of the questions you may have. A bigger issue may be for those students who have not updated their address with the Registrar, and their debit cards were returned in the mail. These students will have to apply for a replacement card (after they update their address) and wait until that arrives, then activate their card and refund preference before their refund can be accessed.

We have also posted updated announcements in Connections, so hopefully this information will be seen by the students affected by this change in procedure.

Please feel free to call call the Help Desk at 314-968-5995 if you have other questions.
