Call for Work

Call for art: Fresh Expressions

 Artthngs (Paul and Connie LaFlam) is accepting submissions for our first exhibit of 2013, Fresh Expressions.  Opening reception will be Saturday, March 23, 2013, 6-9pm. Additional viewing shall be by appointment via email, artthngs@hotmail.com or phone, 314.436.9374. Exhibit closes April 27, 2013. 

This is a no theme exhibit. Open to all, all mediums, will consider installations.  We will exhibit 4 or more works by each artist depending on the size of your Art.

If we don’t know each other send us some examples or send us to a site where we can view your art.  Art needs to be ready to hang.  Nothing to be hung from ceiling. If appropriate we may hang Salon style. We are unable provide tables or pedestals. Artists to provide tags for their art, one attached to the back and one for the wall.  We provide the snacks and beverages, (adult and non).

Here’s the information. Exhibit to be held in the four unique glass enclosed gallery spaces in the Syndicate Building, 915 Olive Street, 4th and 5th floors, Saint Louis, Mo. 63101.  Galleries are shown to virtually dozens of potential art buyers each week, these are people who inquire about buying or leasing and are given a tour of the building.  Gets them thinking about art on walls before they move and the building contains over 150 lofts.

Art drop off Sunday, March 17, 2-4 pm or Monday, March 18, 6-8pm. Art pick-up Sunday, April 28, 2-4 pm or Monday, April 29, 6-8pm. 

Cost to accepted artists: $30.00 If you sell your art no commission.  If we sell your art 20% commission. Fresh Expressions is a show at your own risk exhibit.

Call for Work: Deadline 5 March 2013

MySLART.org is looking for 33 artists to exhibit their work at our "33March" art exhibit at the Old Orchard Gallery in Webster Groves. This exhibit runs from Friday, March 22, through Tuesday, April 2, 2013, and includes an opening reception Friday, March 22, from 5:30pm to 10pm.

Artists are invited to submit three works each in any medium or mixed media. For works submitted to be hung on the wall, each artist is limited to 6’ feet of horizontal wall space for the three works. For sculpture, each artist is limited to an area 6' square. Pedestals (if required) are supplied by the artist.

MySLART.org charges no gallery commissions on any sales of your work, you keep 100%. But there is a $30 entry fee per accepted artist (not per work). There is no fee for submitting your work.

Four artists exhibiting at this show will be selected for best of show, second place, third place, and fourth place awards. These winning artists, as voted by visitors to the opening reception, will each receive a bottle of wine from MySLART.org.

Deadline for received submissions is Tuesday, March 5. But don’t delay submitting. Submissions will be reviewed as received and accepted or rejected only until we have 33 artists accepted. 9 artist slots are already taken.

SALES: 70 % of sales proceeds go to the artist, and 30% to Northern Arts Council.
Artists are responsible for setting prices in advance of delivery. A related contract will be reviewed & signed at delivery.

5 x 5 Exhibition

Local artists are invited to submit art for this non-juried exhibition exploring the power of small-scale works. 5" x 5" artworks will be installed at 427 Gallery/Pearce Neikirk and Partners, Realtors 427 S Florissant Rd. Saint Louis, MO 63135
Guidelines for submitting work for the 5 x 5 Exhibition:
  • Art must be completely original, and produced by local artists
  • All subject matter & media welcome, though must be appropriate for all ages.
  • DIMENSIONS must adhere to 5"h x 5"w (including frame or border). Frames should not exceed 5"x 5".
  • Limit of five (5) entries per artist.
  • In the unlikely event that the number of entries exceeds space limitations or scope of this exhibition, some works may not be included.
Cork and Ferguson Brewing Company
Northern Arts Council exhibits artwork at Cork and Ferguson Brewing Company, both on Florissant Road in Ferguson, MO. A juried exhibition of new art will be installed March 4. Pieces 11” x 14” and larger are welcome. To have your work considered, contact Kathy Czopek: kathyczopek@aim.com, or send a Facebook message to Northern Arts Council, by Friday, March 1. In your message, include media, size and number of pieces you'd like to submit. Schedule for delivery and pickup of accepted artwork is above.

Work submitted will be juried to fit the exhibit space, to display work from a variety of artists, and to show the best quality work chosen from what is entered. An individual may find that all, some or none of their pieces have been chosen for the exhibit. Artists will be asked to pick up any submitted work that is not chosen for the show.

As Winter gives way to Spring, and people begin trading the sweaters and coats for less cumbersome attire, we begin looking for art that will excite us as much as the warmer weather does. And fewer things excite us as much as bare skin! For this exhibit, we are looking for art that depicts a warm, Spring-like feeling, while encompassing some bare skinned model or body part.

* We have very limited space to display explicit nudes, so we ask that you keep them to a minimum.

Offered to full-time Webster students majoring in photography in the School of Communications.  Must be junior or senior status during the year of receipt and possess a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.  Must have FAFSA on file in Webster’s financial aid office.

James H. Wilson II Endowed Memorial Scholarship
$1000.00 (one award)
Offered to students enrolled in the School of Communications full-time or part-time.  Priority consideration is given to students who have lived in the St. Louis area for four years and who have demonstrated financial need.

Nancy Anne Underwood Photography Scholarship
$2000

Nancy Anne Underwood graduated from Webster University in 1990 from the School of Communications.  In 1993, her growing career in photography ended when she was tragically killed in a car accident.  Her husband, David Underwood ’88, established the Nancy Anne Underwood Scholarship Fund to honor her memory and her love of photography. 

Eligibility Requirements:
•    Applicant must be a full-time Webster University student who will be of junior or senior status in the 2013-2014 academic year, working towards a Bachelor of Arts in photography in the School of Communications.
•    All applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.
•    All applicants must have a FAFSA on file in Webster’s financial aid office and be eligible to receive financial aid.

Application Requirements:
•    A printed portfolio consisting of ten of your best photographs.  (A portfolio on disk is not acceptable for this purpose.)  All types of photographic work will be accepted for consideration.  A panel of outside judges selected by the University will review your work.  The panel will consist of two to three professional photographers. 
•    A personal statement addressing why you have chosen photography as your future career.  What are your short-term and long-term objectives?  The statement should be a typed, double-spaced essay of at least 150 words.

The end of the month marks the end of an era for me. I will be moving out of my space in Maplewood and will be using the world around and the 5x bigger Studio Altius for studio sessions. Thank you to everyone who came out for all the art, music and other events I hosted over the past 4 years.  Thus, the moving sale. In addition to photo art prints there will a mish mash of other items such as photo equipment, Silpada jewelry, vintage clothes, electronics, furniture, and more. Come in any time from 8:30AM - 1PM. I intend to stay involved in the art scene so be on the lookout for my work at various art events. I will send out an emails occasionally to let you know what I'm up to.

STUDIO ALTIUS BREW-HA-HA, WHERE GREAT PHOTOGRAPHY MEETS GREAT PARTY! This month’s open shooting theme is “ROMANCE”. Our February Brew-Ha-Ha gives photographers the opportunity work on their inner cupid and practice their skills in the fastest growing photographic trend: boudoir photography. We will have models, intimate sets, and soft, creative lighting.  We are excited to announce our models for this Brew-Ha-Ha include BiBi Dazzle, Zonah Bellum, Pamela Lovett, and Lisa Overman.

Turn Studio Altius into your own personal photography playground! Studio space, state of the art equipment, beautiful and talented models, makeup artists, stylists, and fellow photographers come together to provide an evening of fun, networking, and open shooting photography. Each month we will have open shooting as our new theme for our Brew-Ha-Ha events. This will be a great opportunity to network, hone your skills, try out our space and some new equipment, and learn a few tips from your colleagues!  Fee: $10 and your favorite refreshments. Summer & Fall Registration Dates

Fall 2013 Registration Dates for St. Louis and Online Students

Registration for all undergraduates will begin Wednesday, April 3, and for all graduate students will begin on Monday, April 8.

There will be the usual early registration for upperclassmen. Seniors will be permitted to register on Monday, April 1, and juniors permitted to register on Tuesday, April 2. Registration for undergraduate transfer students will open on Monday, April 22. Non-degree students will not be allowed to register until thirty days before the term starts.

Summer 2013 Registration

The dates listed on the online academic calendar for summer registration have been confirmed. Registration for summer will open Tuesday, March 5, for undergraduates and Thursday, March 7 for graduate students.

Through the lens: A pictorial look at 2012 hosted by the Society of Professional Journalists

Three local photojournalists will showcase their best images of 2012 at Through the Lens, this month’s installment of the News at Noonspeaker series presented by the St Louis Society of Professional Journalists.

Speakers include David Carson, an award-winning photographer and videographer at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and William Greenblatt who shoots for United Press International, the St. Louis Cardinals and the St. Louis Fire Department. In addition, the Belleville News-Democrat will send one of its top photographers to show their best images. The speakers will tell the stories behind photographs and talk about what makes some pictures so memorable. No discussion of images in the news is ever complete without considering the ever-evolving ethics of photojournalism. The photographers will highlight some of the editorial discussions that took place during the selection of ethically arguable images.

PDN Student Contest: Deadline 19 February 2013

The $15,000 Arnold Newman prize for New Directions in Photographic Portraiture: This prize is awarded to a winner of the PDN Photo Annual whose work echoes Arnold Newman's legendary portraiture. The award is funded by The Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation with support from the Maine Media Workshops, American Society of Media Photographers and PDN. Students and Educators, submit your best work from the past year into the Student Photography category.
Winning images will be reproduced in the June Photo Annual issue of PDN®, the most anticipated issue of the year. And to top it off we're throwing an exclusive party in New York City celebrating the winners. Judges, select industry creatives and photographers are among the invited guests. The exposure you receive in the Photo Annual is beyond measure.

  • For the past nine years, PDN has teamed up with Parsons The New School of Design to award students and emerging professionals the Marty Forscher Fellowship Fund for outstanding achievements in humanistic photography. One professional and one student winner will receive a cash award.
  • The Epson Creativity Award is presented to a photographer who demonstrates originality and creativity in his or her approach to black-and-white photography. One winner will be selected to receive a cash scholarship of $1,000.

The dates of the reviews will be announced at the meeting, and you will be able to sign up for time slots at the orientation meeting.
