Juried Photography Exhibitions and Publications
Calls for Submissions:

FINDING THE LIGHT
Juror: Don Ross, fine art and commercial photographer
Deadline: April 7, 2014

Photography - from the Greek words meaning "to write with light." As all photographers know, light is an essential component of any photograph. In FINDING THE LIGHT, we will feature photographs whose success as visual images rests on the careful awareness and use of light, whether natural or artificial. The exhibition juror, photographer Don Ross, will choose 40 photographs for display at PhotoPlace Gallery from July 8th through August 1st. Don will also select up to 35 additional photographs for the gallery's Online Annex. All selected work will be included in an exhibition catalog available for purchase. To help artists defray costs, PhotoPlace Gallery offers to mat and frame work selected for exhibition free of charge, providing artists print their images to our pre-cut mat and frame sizes. Submission fee: $30 for five photos, $7 each additional photo.  Click here for details

THE HUMAN-ALTERED LANDSCAPE
Juror: Russell Lord, the Freeman Family Curator of Photographs at the New Orleans Museum of Art
Deadline: May 5, 2014

In 1975, the landmark exhibition, "New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-altered Landscape," debuted at the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House in Rochester, NY. Included were such important photographs as Robert Adams, Frank Gohlke, and Stephen Shore, with work that challenged the primacy of wilderness landscape popularized by Ansel Adams and the Sierra Club. Typical of the photographs were images of human presence in the ladnscape, ranging from houses in subdivisions in Denver by Robert Adams to a water tower under construction by Gohlke. For the PhotoPlace exhibition THE HUMAN-ALTERED LANDSCAPE, we hope to update the spirit of "New Topographics" with photographs that envision the interactions between humans and the natural world. Buildings, bridges, barns, dams, towers, fences, roads -- any merging of human presence with the natural world is valid.

We are honored that Russell Lord, the Freeman Family Curator of Photographs at the New Orleans Museum of Art, will be the juror for this exhibition. He will choose 40 photographs for display at PhotoPlace Gallery from August 5 through August 30th. He will also select up to 35 additional photographs for the gallery's Online Annex.

JPEGs must be RGB Color (NO grayscale), 300 dpi preferred, minimum 800 pixels. Do not submit low resolution images. Label CD with artist's full name and place in protective case for mailing. Submissions that do not comply with rules of entry will not be presented to the juror. Works selected for exhibition that are not accurately depicted by JPEGs may be removed from exhibit at Artistic Director's discretion.

THE JURYING PROCESS
If you are not already aware, jurying an exhibition at Art Saint Louis is always an anonymous and fair process. What this means is that at no time before or during the jurying process do our Jurors know the names of entering artists. The Jurors are presented all entrants' JPEGs in an anonymous digital image presentation and the only information provided to them about the artwork is the following: artwork title, year, media, dimensions & method of presentation (i.e. wall, pedestal, floor). Jurors are never shown the names of any artists. Both artworks that you submit for jurying are presented one after the other in the presentation the jurors view. So, if you are artist #25, your two entries are in the presentation after artist #24 and before artist #26. From the jurying presentation and info provided about the artworks, the jurors make their selections for the final exhibit. Artwork selection decisions are in part based on a set of specific jurying instructions & criteria relating to the theme of the exhibit as well as specific conditions & rules of the Gallery. At no time are the Jurors shown entrants' names and oftentimes do not even see names for selected artists until they arrive to the Gallery to view the final exhibit on the Gallery walls.

SALES & INSURANCE
Artworks are insured at 50% of retail value during exhibit. Artist responsible for work in transit to/from ASL. All sales are through Art Saint Louis with 30% donation on work sold to ASL and 70% to artist. Artist responsible for delivery of sold work to buyer at end of exhibit.

ARTIST HONORARIUMS & AWARDS

Additionally, two artists will be selected by the public, via popular vote facilitated through social media interaction, to receive a non-cash "Audience Choice" award.
