Call for Work: Deadline 21 March 2014

"Picture of Health"
juried exhibition
Deadline to enter: March 21, 2014

It is widely recognized that the arts can have a profound impact on health and healing. Art can infiltrate the challenging hospital environment with offerings of beauty, spirituality, humor and celebration. Works submitted for this all media juried exhibit should embody, illustrate or otherwise express concepts of physical, spiritual and/or mental well-being, i.e. "What is your picture of health?" Artworks are sought to further the goals of the exhibition program to create a healing, uplifting space for patients, families, and staff caregivers at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

This group exhibition is presented by Art Saint Louis at Barnes-Jewish Hospital with generous support from The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital. The exhibit will be presented in the hallway adjacent to the South lobby of the main campus of Barnes-Jewish Hospital off of Kingshighway Blvd. in St. Louis, MO.

Exhibition dates: June 3, 2014-October 1, 2014. The exhibition will feature approximately 15 to 20 artworks total.

Open to artists 21 years of age and older living in the St. Louis, Missouri region and surrounding 200-mile radius. Chicago, IL and Kansas City, MO are not eligible.

The deadline to submit works for this exhibit is March 21, 2014. We encourage you to send your entry in before the deadline. Entries postmarked by March 21, but not received in the mail by March 25 will be returned to artist.

Title each JPEG file to correspond to image # on the entry form using the following format: yourlastname.image1. Include printed image reference sheet with a small-sized image of each artwork on CD (prefer color print-out; if not available, b/w ok). Do not include any unrelated files, folders or documents on CD. NO iPhoto folders, no resumes! ONLY your JPEGs should be on the CD. Label CD with artist's full name and place in protective case for mailing. Submissions that do not comply with rules of entry will not be presented to the juror. Works selected for exhibition that are not accurately depicted by JPEGs may be removed from exhibit at Artistic Director's discretion.

If you are not already aware, jurying an exhibition at Art Saint Louis is always an anonymous and fair process. What this means is that at no time before or during the jurying process do our Jurors know the names of entering artists. The Jurors are presented all entrants' JPEGs in an anonymous digital image presentation and the only information provided to them about the artwork is the following: artwork title, year, media, dimensions & method of presentation (i.e. wall, pedestal, floor). Jurors are never shown the names of any artists. Both artworks that you submit for jurying are presented one after the other in the presentation the jurors view. So, if you are artist #25, your two entries are in the presentation after artist #24 and before artist #26. From the jurying presentation and info provided about the artworks, the jurors make their selections for the final exhibit. Artwork selection decisions are in part based on a set of specific jurying instructions & criteria relating to the theme of the exhibit as well as specific conditions & rules of the Gallery. At no time are the Jurors shown entrants' names and oftentimes do not even see names for selected artists until they arrive to the Gallery to view the final exhibit on the Gallery walls.

Artworks are insured at 50% of retail value during exhibit. Artist responsible for work in transit to/from ASL. All sales are through Art Saint Louis with 30% donation on work sold to ASL and 70% to artist. Artist responsible for delivery of sold work to buyer at end of exhibit.

All artists whose works are selected for this exhibition will receive an honorarium of $150. Additionally, two artists will be selected by the public, via popular vote facilitated through social media interaction, to receive a non-cash "Audience Choice" award. These two "Audience Choice" award-winning artists will be recognized in program materials online and will each receive a complimentary, one-year membership to Art Saint Louis.

All work selected for exhibit must be delivered to the Art Saint Louis Gallery ready to install. Artwork must be framed or gallery-wrapped canvas and equipped with hanging wire stretched across back of artwork. NO saw tooth hangers or clip-style frames. No loose plexi that is clipped/nailed to wall. No works that are tacked, pinned, taped, velcroed, painted on, or affixed directly to/on Gallery walls. Art Saint Louis reserves the right to install accepted works in a manner deemed necessary for a well-designed exhibition and/or for security purposes, including the use of security brackets or other security-related hardware or fixtures.

There is NO entry fee to submit works for jurying for this exhibit. Entry is free of charge. Artists still must submit all required materials (entry form, CD with JPEGs, printed image reference sheet) and comply with the rules of entry in order to have work considered for this exhibit.

The entry form for this exhibit is required with all entries and is downloadable directly from our website here. Entries submitted without entry form will be returned to artist unprocessed. All entries require: entry form filled out in full (please do not leave any areas on the form blank), plus JPEGs on CD and printed image reference sheet.

Be sure that you provide all information requested on the entry form: Your contact info, including phone & email, address, and signature. For each entry: artwork title, year completed, dimensions (if 2-d, we need the artwork's final framed size; if 3-d, then height x width x depth), sale price (or, if not for sale, 50% retail value is required for insurance purposes). Please provide all of the requested information on your entry form, as it is all required for entry. Incomplete entry forms will be returned to artist unprocessed & will not accepted for jurying. Image reference sheet is not a written description of your images or an artist's statement--this is a thumbnail-sized printed image we can use for reference. The image is not used for jurying, simply for administration/entry processing.
