Portraiture: Expression and GestureJuror:  Karen Haas
Deadline:  Monday, December 1, 2014

A flicker of a smile, a twinkle in the eyes, a subtle gesture of the hand, the blur of spontaneous movement - photography is uniquely capable of capturing the briefest slice of a subject's life. Good portraits give us insight into the subject; great portraits can give us insight into what it is to be human.  For "Portraiture: Expression and Gesture", we seek portraits (self- or otherwise) that inform us.

Submission fee: $30 for up to five images, $7 for each additional image.

About the JurorKaren Haas is Curator of The Lane Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The unprecedented collection of over 6,000 images includes 2,500 photographs by Edward Weston, the entire photographic estate of Charles Sheeler, and 500 works by Ansel Adams, not to mention works by Diane Arbus, Brancusi, Bravo, Cunningham, Frank, Fuss, Goldin, Kertesz, Lange, Michals, Modotti, Morell, Penn, Steichen, Strand, Sudek, and many more 20th Century masters. We are so pleased Karen Haas has agreed to return to the task of jurying for PhotoPlace Gallery; her keen eye and experience are perfectly suited for the exhibition "Portraiture: Expression and Gesture."

THE JURYING PROCESS
The method by which ALL exhibitions are juried at Art Saint Louis is always a fair and blind (anonymous) process. What this means is that at no time before or during the jurying process do our Jurors know the names of entering artists. The Jurors are presented all entrants' JPEGs in an anonymous digital image presentation and the only information provided to them pertains to the artwork and includes the following: artwork title, year, media, dimensions, and method of presentation (displayed on the wall, sits on a pedestal). Jurors are never shown the names of any artists. All artworks that you submit for jurying are presented one after the other in the presentation that the jurors view. So, if you are artist #25, your artworks/entries are in the presentation after artist #24 and before artist #26. From the jurying presentation and information provided about the artworks, the jurors make their selections for the final exhibit. Artwork selection decisions are in part based on a set of specific jurying instructions & criteria relating to the theme of the exhibit as well as specific conditions & rules of the Gallery. For non-thematic exhibitions, a well-rounded exhibit is based on the Jurors' aesthetics along with general exhibition criteria established for all exhibits by Art Saint Louis' Artistic Director. This is a blind process and at no time are the Jurors shown entrants' names, and oftentimes they do not even see names for selected artists until they arrive to the Gallery to view the final exhibit on the Gallery walls. Ours is a fair jurying process.

There is no entry fee to submit works for jurying for this exhibit. Artists still must submit all other materials (entry form, JPEGs) and comply with the rules of entry in order to have work considered for this exhibit.
