THE JURYING PROCESS
If you are not already aware, jurying an exhibition at Art Saint Louis is always an anonymous and fair process. What this means is that at no time before or during the jurying process do our Jurors know the names of entering artists. The Jurors are presented all entrants' JPEGs in an anonymous digital image presentation and the only information provided to them about the artwork is the following: artwork title, year, media, dimensions & method of presentation (i.e. wall, pedestal, floor). Jurors are never shown the names of any artists. Both artworks that you submit for jurying are presented one after the other in the presentation the jurors view. So, if you are artist #25, your two entries are in the presentation after artist #24 and before artist #26. From the jurying presentation and info provided about the artworks, the jurors make their selections for the final exhibit. Artwork selection decisions are in part based on a set of specific jurying instructions & criteria relating to the theme of the exhibit as well as specific conditions & rules of the Gallery. At no time are the Jurors shown entrants' names and oftentimes do not even see names for selected artists until they arrive to the Gallery to view the final exhibit on the Gallery walls.

Talk on Lee Miller: Friday, 18 February 2014

Lee Miller was the “It Girl” of 1927, a model who embodied elegance, refinement, and flapper chic. She became unemployable thanks to a scandal involving a Kotex ad, and then her life was transformed. She moved to Paris, apprenticed herself to artist Man Ray and steadily became one of the most important photographers of her generation. Her brilliant photos helped revolutionize the fashion industry, but she also photographed war, poverty, and politics. (One of her most bizarre and iconic photos is of herself in Hitler’s bathtub).

Lee Miller’s colorful life will be the topic of a lecture presented by Yale historian Becky Conekin on Friday, April 18 from 12–1 pm at Webster University in SVER 123. Conekin has written a book about Miller that she will discuss during her talk, which is titled: “Lee Miller in Fashion.”

According to The New York Times, Conekin’s book “expands our view of that protean spirit, an American model who became a European Surrealist, a fearless photojournalist, and other things besides.” The Huffington Post calls it, “a lush page-turner that offers a very intimate look at a visionary and risk-taker who lived her life to the fullest.”

The event is sponsored by the Department of History, Politics, and International Relations; the English Department, the College of Arts and Sciences; and the Department of Art, Design, and Art History, Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts, Webster University. Subterranean Books will sponsor a book signing following the talk.

The lecture is open to the public.

Photograph Webster Groves on Film

Call for Analog Photographers

Photographers are invited to a one-day analog photography event in Webster Groves, Saturday, May 10, sponsored by the Webster Community Arts Foundation. The event is free and open to all ages, but pre-registration is required.

Combined with Paint Webster, when more than 75 plein air artists of all abilities spend the day capturing Webster Groves on paper and canvas, Photograph Webster invites film photographers to find that perfect composition and show their unique perspective. Participating photographers will showcase their work in the Community Tent at WCAF’s free art fair, Art&Air, June 6-8 in Webster.

Shooting with film is special. It’s not old-fashioned. It takes time, care, and extra effort, just like painting plein air. This is an opportunity for analog photographers to show what they can do.

Photographers may shoot any kind of film – Polaroid, black & white, or color – and with any  kind of camera, including toy cameras, pinholes, large formats or old 35mms.They can bring one piece of art from that day's film shoot for public display at the Community Tent at Art&Air June 6-8.

Photograph Webster relies on the integrity of the photographer to show work that was only photographed on May 10, 2014, and only with film.

To pre-register, send an email to Jeane Vogel, j.vogel@wcaf.org.
