The contest was initiated by the Schankman family to honor the memory of Irvin Schankman (1924-2004), a professional photographer and the founder of Allied Photocolor and Imaging Center. Schankman’s dedication to documenting St. Louis began when he picked up his first camera in 6th grade. In his junior year of high school he made his way through police lines to shoot a blazing gasoline storage facility. These photographs, which appeared in St. Louis’ Star Times as dramatic silhouettes, marked the beginning of his career.
