Amnesty International Call for Artists!

Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights!
“ART FOR HUMAN RIGHTS” Exhibit
Believe ~ Create ~ Inspire

October 24-26, Amnesty International will be hosting its Midwest Regional Conference right here in St. Louis. Over 500 activists from the Midwest will be inspired, educated, and learn how to work with Amnesty to defend human rights around the world. It will be an exciting weekend with speakers, including experienced human rights defenders, a life-size replica of the Guantánamo Cell (touring the US and featured on the Daily Show), a slam poetry show hosted by national poetry slam champion and three-time HBO Def Poetry veteran Big Poppa E, a celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and an “ART FOR HUMAN RIGHTS” Exhibit.

We are inviting local artists of all levels from the St. Louis area to join with us in our celebration of human rights and our continued fight for justice and submit your human-rights themed art! It can be a celebration of hope; a call for justice; a reflection on a particular human right; a piece inspired by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights itself… it is your expression of human rights!

Your art will be displayed throughout the conference, and participants in the conference will have a change to vote on the piece that inspires them the most. The winner will be honored as the Amnesty Artist of Conscience. After the conference the pieces will then be displayed at various St. Louis businesses after the conference, to help raise awareness for human rights, Amnesty International, and to display your passion and talent to our neighbors.

Artists please contact Tarah Demant at tarahdemant@hotmail.com or 314-863-4548 by
October 15 with: name, phone number, e-mail by October 22 with: final piece, name, title of piece, medium, artist statement/brief description of your piece (optional), and "FD"(for donation), "FS" (for sale), or "NFS" (not for sale) or with any questions/interest

PIEA International Student-Teacher Competition and Exhibition coming soon

Rules and entry forms for the 2009 PIEA International Student-Teacher Competition and Exhibition may be found at http://pieapma.org/contest

Please familiarize yourself closely with the 2009 rules as several items have changed.

New this year is the requirement that all submitted prints must have at least a 1/2" white border outside the image area. In years past, images were damaged while handling them as no edge was available for the judging and mounting of prints. Judging last year consisted of over 6000 prints! The white border will greatly enhance the traveling exhibitions as I will no longer have to remove image area that had been damaged before mounting or during shipping. Please remember to package your images well to protect them from wrinkling and corner damage.

Also worth noting is the importance of supplying a working email and computer platform of choice for each entrant on the individual entry forms. Many of our prizes are computer system specific or require the email address to send further information from our sponsors concerning the students winnings. Emails are not used for advertising purposes.

Checklist:
  • All entries are properly labeled on the back with name, school and category and theTOP of the image designated. (Print Legibly!)
  • Image area is at least 5”x5” and no larger than 14”x14” and has a 1/2” white border on all sides.
  • Each entrant has filled out an entry form with all requested info.
  • Entries have been mailed to arrive in Jackson, Michigan by December 5, 2008.

At this moment there are 64 sponsors donating over $157, 500.00 in prizes. More are expected.

Start thinking about your entries now. We can mail all the Webster entries together to save you time and money. More about that soon.

Lomography/Urban Outiftters contest: Deadlines 7 & 14 September 2008

Caroline Philippone points us to a site she recommends to you:

"I stumbled upon a neat photo contest that I thought fellow photo students would be interested in. It's sponsored by Lomography and Urban Outfitters. What I thought the more unique part of this contest was that it is specifically for people who work with film. The idea is to scan in negative and upload it to the site. The competition starts today the 21st, and runs for three weeks, with a new challenge every week. Without giving you too much info I have included the link for you to check out. http://urbannomad.lomography.com. If nothing else it is a more commercial contest, with prizes at $2,000, and artwork to be printed for Urban Outfitters stores."

As with any contest, be sure to read the terms and conditions! In this case, you are granting them unlimited use without compensation to you of any photo you submit, whether or not you win. But you can make your own decisions about the best way to get exposure for your work.
