VLAA’s Business Edge seminar series

St. Louis Volunteer Lawyers and Accountants for the Arts (VLAA)’s Business Edge seminar series for individual artists of all disciplines continues in this fall with these offerings:

CAREER PLANNING FOR ARTISTS
Monday, Sept. 22, 2008 (7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.)
What does success look like to you? This hands-on workshop, presented with thanks to our colleagues at Springboard for the Arts in St. Paul, will help you examine your career, both professionally and artistically. You’ll learn how to chart a “career path” that incorporates specific strategies and how to put your plan into action. Instructors: Susan Bostwick, artist; and Sue Greenberg, VLAA executive director

SO YOU HAVE AN LLC, NOW WHAT?
Monday, Oct. 6, 2008 (7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.)
Find out if a limited liability company really is for you. Attorney Rob Kahn will cover all the basics, including how to form and run an LLC, operating agreements, when you can be held personally liable and how LLCs are taxed.

MARKETING & PROFESSIONAL PRESENTATION
Monday, Oct. 27, 2008 (7:00 to 9:00 p.m.)
Learn how to market your art with the same intensity you used to create it. We’ll discuss promotional materials and help you identify the right audience, position yourself (including pricing), set priorities and stop procrastinating. Instructors: Jen Meyer, Washington University School of Art; Kate Poss, Art St. Louis; and VLAA’s Sue Greenberg

WEB SITE & MYSPACE SHOW AND TELL
Monday, Nov. 3, 2008 (7:00 to 9:00 p.m.)
What makes a Web site stand out? David Lowey, Fleishman-Hillard, will share the secrets of exceptional design, hassle-free maintenance and generating traffic. Then a panel of experts ­ Emily Blumenfeld, Via Partnership; Traci Moore Clay, graphic designer; and Jim Dunn, Bigfatcat Management and Public Relations ­ will critique a wide variety of artist sites and MySpace band pages.

The seminars will be held in the Regional Arts Commission’s building, 6128 Delmar, which is located across the street from the Pageant and just west of the Delmar MetroLink station.
