RETURN OF THE OUTLAW (PRINTMAKERS)
Reception: Saturday, March 19th, 2011, 6-8 pm
runs through April 30th Hours: Tues.-Sat. 10am-5pm
Free and open to the public.

The Philip Slein Gallery is pleased to announce The Return of the Outlaw (Printmakers). For six weeks only, the Philip Slein Gallery has re-constituted the ragtag bunch of printmakers known as the Outlaw Printmakers by bringing together some of the original members and some of our personal favorites.

Whether the subject is bad girls (Peregrine Honig), bad boys (Tom Huck), monsters (Bill Fick), aliens and space travelers (John Jacobsmeyer), historical figures trapped in a time-warp or a netherworld (Michael Krueger), weird allegorical scenes inside the goldmine of American history (Don Colley); whether it’s darkness on the edge of town (Frank Stack), or another green world (Tom Reed); whether it’s the inspiration of the Far East (Phyllis Bramson) or the anarchy of punk and grunge (Art Chantry), what this bunch has in common is the underground sensibility.

Everybody's Autobiography:
Robert Gober & Kerry James Marshall
Curated by Jessica Baran

March 17th-April 24th, 2011
Opening Reception: Tonight, Thursday, March 17th, 5:30-9pm

In conjunction with the opening reception, curator Jessica Baran and Kelly Lamb Pollock, director of COCA, will deliver remarks about the exhibition beginning at 5:30pm.

Titled after the 1937 book by Gertrude Stein, "Everybody's Autobiography" pairs a suite of new prints by Kerry James Marshall with hand printed wallpaper designed by Robert Gober. The exhibition is an intimate visual essay on the art of the everyday, which, like Stein's poetry, negotiates the strange rhythms of repetition and a peculiar brand of radicality, wherein common language, habits and objects become thoroughly uncommon through ritual's recurrent music.

Drawing on this year's SGCI conference theme of Equilibrium, this exhibition celebrates the extraordinary democracy of repeated patterns and the most seemingly banal motifs of daily living, emphasizing their capacity to equalize even the most stratified, extreme, or marginalized of life narratives.

Good Citizen Gallery: Friday, 22 April 2011

Jose Ferreira: Wandering Thomas
Opening Reception, Friday April 22 - 6-10 pm
April 22 - May 28 2011
Gallery Hours Fri., Sat. Noon - 5pm and by appointment

Wandering Thomas will include a recent body of work in which Jose Ferreira explores the notion of doubt embodied as a state between belief and disbelief. Through a series of photographs and works on paper, he emphasizes a state of reality in which the mind remains suspended between two contradictory propositions, unable to assent to either. Wandering Thomas refers to Caravaggio's The Incredulity of Saint Thomas (c. 1602), where Thomas's only way of being convinced of Christ's resurrection is by probing his wounds. This concept is extended metaphorically to spaces in the city, which harbor a deep symbolic resonance of being in transition-spaces and states that are constantly in-between.

Doubt brings into question the notion of "reality". It is a common form of psychological discord, with the rational part of one's thought involved in weighing evidence, without which belief has no real substance. Søren Kierkegaard has suggested that, for one to truly possess belief, one would also require a questioning of those beliefs. Decisions in politics, ethics, and law, which frequently determine the course of individual life, place great importance on doubt, and often foster elaborate adversarial processes to carefully sort through the evidence.

The photographs in the exhibition present the viewer with tactile, yet evanescent phenomena, which privilege natural elements, confusing our sense of time and space. In these works, ephemeral, unpredictable veils of mist, smoke, and pollution often obscure the metropolis, such that the concrete is displaced by the temporal, the human-made dwarfed by the phenomenal, and the viewer is disarmed by a suddenly unfamiliar space.

The exhibition portrays a series of meanders in which the artist seeks to reconcile a state of transitory identity, and to claim a margin of solace within lived experience.
