PIEA Contest: Deadline Tuesday, 30 October 2007

It's time to enter the 2008 PIEA International Student-Teacher Photo Competition and Exhibition!

To date, the 2008 PIEA International Student-Teacher Photo Competition and Exhibition is proud to have 80 sponsors, and over $157,000 in prizes!

If you were a student any time in 2007, you are eligible for this contest, even if you have graduated. Check the rules and start getting your entries ready now. Be sure to follow the rules carefully, as many photos entered have been disqualified in the past. (Pay careful attention to size requirements!)

The deadline this year is in November. If you have a major within the School of Communications (not necessarily photography), the Dean has generously offered to pay your entry fees if you participate in our group submission. To do so, bring your photos for the contest with entry forms filled out and photos marked as required to Bill Barrett by Tuesday, 30 October 2007. We will ship them to arrive in time for the contest. Call for Work: Deadline 5 November 2007

CALL TO ARTISTS: The Soulard Art Market and Contemporary Gallery is calling for submissions to 'Show Me' a juried exhibition of local artists Nov.15-Dec.2. S.A.M. is looking to represent 25 artists in our newly launched space. Each artist can submit up to 3 original works. We accept most media (Sorry, NO video or ceiling-suspended artwork.) Sculpture should be no larger than: Height: 6ft and Width: 2ft. Framed 2D artwork must be ready for hanging (no saw tooth hangers).

All artwork for consideration MUST be submitted via JPEG/JPG image and accompanying e-mail must include title/media/measurements and contact e-mail address and phone number. File size for each work should not exceed 500kb. Send e-mail and JPEG(s) to jury@soulardartmarket.com. All submissions to be received no later than Nov. 5 for consideration.

Accepted artists must submit an operational costs fee of $30. There will be no commission, artists will retain 100% of sales. We look forward to seeing your art in the upcoming exhibition.

Call for Work: Deadline 1 November 2007

From view camera to toy camera, from Polaroid emulsion transfer to photolithography, Art Coop wants to see your work. Artists utilizing the photographic medium in any way are invited to submit three works each for exhibition at Photogrammar, opening November 9 at Art Coop.

Photogrammar is Art Coop's annual survey of the breadth and depth of St. Louis' photographic community. It is open to all artists living within 75 miles of downtown St. Louis. Art will be exhibited in the Central West End at three locations: 4519 Olive, 4515 Olive and 462 North Taylor (three doors down the street). Art exhibited on Olive Street will hang from November 9 to 11. Art exhibited on Taylor will hang from November 9 to December 4. Please request a location when submitting art to this CFA.

Art Coop charges no gallery commission on sales of your work, but there is a $25 entry fee per artist (not per work), payable on installation of your work. Exhibition is limited to the first 40 artists accepted

Deadline for received submissions is November 1. But don't delay submitting. Submissions will be reviewed as received and accepted or rejected only until we have 40 artists accepted. 7 artist slots are already filled. To submit your work for review, send an email to artcoopstl@hotmail.com with your JPEGs attached or provide a website address where we can see your work.

Held at the prestigious Palais des Festivals, Cannes, between the 21st and 25th April 2008, The Sony World Photography Awards proudly give tribute to photographers around the globe in all categories. From landscape to music, photojournalism to fashion, the Sony World Photography Awards showcases the world’s best images taken by the most renowned photographers as well as the yet undiscovered.

The competition has both professional and amateur categories and is free to enter.

Meet at 8:30am at Hartford Coffee in the Tower Grove South neighborhood of south St. Louis. We'll distribute a list of ten items/concepts to photograph. Or, now this part is new, you can receive the list via email in the comfort of your own boring home, at midnight on Scavenger Eve.

You shoot all day. Reconvene at 5:00pm at the Schlafly Tap Room downtown (address below) to edit and prep jpegs for the slide show. Please bring a laptop and be prepared to share it, and also a jump drive or CD to transfer image files. You can also edit at home if you wish, so long as we have your images by 6:30pm. Bring your appetite! A scrumptious buffet will be served up by the Tap Room at 6pm. You are on your own for St. Louis' singular Schlafly beer. Slide show at 7:00pm. Revelry, merriment, and debauchery until 10.

This event is free for members, $10 for non-members.

Flu vaccines available at Student Health Services

Student Health Services will once again be offering influenza vaccinations this month. The vaccinations will only be available on Monday, October 8 through Friday, October 12, from 9:00 to 4:30 each day.

Vaccinations for faculty and staff members are priced at $25, and for students at $10. Student Health Services is subsidizing the cost of the student vaccinations, and are only covering our costs at the faculty and staff price.

Please call 314-968-6922 or email health@webster.edu to set up an appointment, or stop by Student Health Services, Loretto Hall room 112, on any of these days to receive your vaccination.

We will accept cash or checks. We prefer that students charge the cost of their vaccine to their student account.

“What is a City?” Conference: 25-26 October 2007

The UMSL Center for the Humanities presents its 13th annual “What is a City?” conference. This year’s theme is Urban perspectives in film, fiction, and photography: understanding cities through images and words. This year’s conference includes a variety of award winning speakers from around the country. The conference examines urban life in contemporary and historical films, fiction, television, and photography.

Susan Stang, Professor of Photography here at Webster, is a featured speaker. She will show images from her book FIRENZE un incontro (Encountering Florence). Her book aims express the beauty and history of Florence, Italy through words and photographs.

Marco Williams, an award winning documentary and fiction film director. His work has been featured at the Sundance Film Festival, on the PBS series Frontline, and on the PBS program POV. Williams will show clips from his powerful documentary, Banished: The Violent Expulsion of African Americans and the Remaking of the American City. Andrew Hurley, Professor of History at UMSL, will screen his video Suburbs on Wheels: A History of American Trailer Parks.

“What is a City?” is free and open to the public. Advance registration is requested at (314) 516-5972. A parking permit will be mailed to those who pre-register. Conference runs Thursday, Oct. 25, 8:45 a.m. – 5:15 p.m., and Friday, Oct. 26, 8:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. We encourage registrants to bring canned food donations, which will be delivered to a hunger-relief organization. Conference events include a reception for the audience in Gallery 210, 4:15 p.m. – 5:15p.m., Thursday, Oct. 25.

Studio Altius News

SEEN 2007 PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST AND SHOW
Studio Altius is inviting photographers to submit artwork for SEEN 2007, a photography show of best work of St. Louis-area photographers in 2007. The finalists are selected by a blind jury. The First Prize will be $200, and the top finalist in each category will receive other awards from our sponsors. The top 50 pieces will be displayed in the SEEN 2007 show at Studio Altius throughout the month of December.

The entry fee for this show is only $10, you may enter as many times in as many categories as you wish, however, you must submit a new entry fee for every piece you enter. Categories are: Landscape; Cityscape/Architecture; Portrait; Black & White; Photo Journalism; Still Life; Wedding; Advertising (includes design). The deadline for submissions is November 9, 2007.

WEBSTER/WASH U/MERAMEC WEDNESDAYS
Are you a full time student at Webster University, Washington University, or St. Louis Community College - Meramec? If so, you can shoot in the studio for $10/hour on Wednesday mornings from 8am-noon. Regular student discount does not apply to this program.

STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
November 17, 2007, 12pm-4pm
TOPIC: MOVEMENT
This workshop is an opportunity for photographers to hone their skills of shooting human movement. Several techniques will be taught and photographers will have plenty of opportunities to experiment. The emphasis is on experiential learning, dialogue/networking with colleagues, and coaching of studio skills. We will have one model for every two photographers registered and a MUA. If the weather is good, we can shoot outside too. David Cerven, the owner of Studio Altius, will be the instructor and will be on hand to give tips, suggestions, and advice...coaching as needed. A fee of $60 will cover the models and MUA as well as studio time. Or check out some shots from the last workshop.

Using a critical and analytical approach to his subject matter, Hernandez’s photographs of Los Angeles and other peopled urban settings meld issues of race, class and other social concerns with formal and aesthetic values.

Gateway Media Literacy Partnership

Join Fellow Students and the Gateway Media Literacy Partners

The Gateway Media Literacy Partnership is a volunteer organization seeking student members from the St. Louis area.

The GMLP Mission:
  • Promote media literacy in the STL region
  • Initiate a sustained education campaign that defines & clarifies the need for & value of media literacy
  • Promote community partnerships & collaborations
  • Provide support for media literacy projects
  • Act as a conduit for national initiatives
If you are a student in the area please consider joining the GMLP. The student subcommittee will build a support network for students in the area while we work to improve the communities we care about. Students interested in media literacy/communications and education are encouraged to participate.

The GMLP has numerous subcommittees that need volunteers to help out. A few include Education and Government Relations, Publications, Development, Recruitment, Marketing Communications/Technology, Programming.
