About the Juror
Reid Callanan, founder and director of Santa Fe Photographic Workshops in Santa Fe, New Mexico

Reid Callanan is founder and director of the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, currently in its twenty-sixth year offering workshops to the international imaging community. In addition to educational programs in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Havana, Cuba, the Workshops partners with National Geographic to offer photography workshops around the world.

Juror’s Statement
I look at lots of images every day. Probably more than almost anyone in the photographic community, and I find this process exhilarating most of the time. Those few times when I am not so excited about looking at photographs are when the images are poorly crafted and not well considered. If I have to ask myself, "what am I looking at here?" —it's not a good sign. So, offer me photographs that have clarity in terms of what I am looking at and images that are well crafted. The second thing I enjoy is looking at images that surprise me—images I haven't seen before. This is a tough task in this day and age, but if you create images from your personal experience that tap into your emotions and imagination, I will take note and hopefully be surprised. Show me yourself in your photographs or something you are curious about. If I can't see you in your images, then I probably won't look for very long. . . .

WE HAVE A NEW ONLINE ENTRY FORM FOR SUBMITTING WORK TO COMPETITIONS

Prepare Your Files
1. Files should be 1200 pixels in the longest dimension and saved in JPEG format on the highest quality setting. Images should also be saved in Adobe RGB color space.

Call for Work: Deadline 12 May 2016

Don't miss the opportunity to enter
our next all media juried exhibition
Entry deadline: May 12, 2016

SERENDIPITY
"Serendipity" is a juried exhibition featuring artworks where unexpected discoveries occurred in the process of/or in connection with art making. This exhibit aims to present artworks that demonstrate how the occurrence of accidents, chance, and discovery benefit the creative process as well as the final artwork. Oftentimes, artists begin making artworks and then something unexpected occurs during the art making process--a "happy accident." In art, this happens often when artists set about to create one thing, yet something unplanned happens to the artwork that surprisingly and successfully changes the final outcome. We are hoping to examine the role that serendipity plays in art making, art and the lives of artists. All explorations of this theme are invited. Artworks in all media, techniques and styles are encouraged.

ABOUT ART SAINT LOUIS
Located on the ground floor of the historic and beautifully renovated Park Pacific building at 1223 Pine Street in downtown St. Louis, Missouri, Art Saint Louis is home to one of the most popular and frequently visited exhibition spaces in the St. Louis region. Created in 2013 and built upon the organization's 31-year success in connecting St. Louis regional artists and audiences, our 2,700 square foot space Gallery boasts a year-round series of professionally juried group exhibitions showcasing the best of the region's contemporary visual art. Highlighting each exhibition, Art Saint Louis opening receptions are a cultural mainstay in downtown St. Louis and are followed throughout the run of each exhibit with extensive viewing hours Monday through Saturday and an average of over 500 visitors per week. Uniquely designed as a gallery/café hybrid, the space is also the one and only café home of St. Louis coffee roaster Mississippi Mud Coffee Roasters Café, making it a cultural and social destination like no other in the St. Louis region. THE JURYING PROCESS
The method by which ALL exhibitions are juried at Art Saint Louis is always a fair and blind (anonymous) process. What this means is that at no time before or during the jurying process do our Jurors know the names of entering artists. The Jurors are presented all entrants' JPEGs in an anonymous digital image presentation and the only information provided to them pertains to the artwork and includes the following: artwork title, year, media, dimensions, and method of presentation (displayed on the wall, sits on a pedestal). Jurors are never shown the names of any artists. All artworks that you submit for jurying are presented one after the other in the presentation that the jurors view. So, if you are artist #25, your artworks/entries are in the presentation after artist #24 and before artist #26. From the jurying presentation and information provided about the artworks, the jurors make their selections for the final exhibit. Artwork selection decisions are in part based on a set of specific jurying instructions & criteria relating to the theme of the exhibit as well as specific conditions & rules of the Gallery. For non-thematic exhibitions, a well-rounded exhibit is based on the Jurors' aesthetics along with general exhibition criteria established for all exhibits by Art Saint Louis' Artistic Director. This is a blind and FAIR process and at no time are the Jurors shown entrants' names, and oftentimes they do not even see names for selected artists until they arrive to the Gallery to view the final exhibit on the Gallery walls. Ours is a fair jurying process.

SALES & INSURANCE
  • All artworks must either have a sale price or be marked Not for Sale (NFS).
  • No works marked POR (price on request) will be accepted.
  • Artist's sale prices listed with original entry submitted for jurying may not be changed after entry deadline (May 12, 2016).
  • All sales are through Art Saint Louis with 30% donation/commission on work sold to ASL and 70% to artist. Sale price includes Art Saint Louis' commission.
  • Artist responsible for delivery of sold work to buyer at end of exhibit. Artworks are insured at 50% of retail value during exhibit.
  • Artist responsible for work in transit to/from ASL.
