Emerging Photographer contest: Deadline 5 March 2015

Enter Emerging Photographer by March 5 for the chance to have your work publish in the Summer 2015 print and digital issue.
Emerging: Photo by Teresa Castr

Each week, we've featured a different artist from the Emerging Photographer Winter 2014 issue in anticipation of the current submission period's deadline of March 5. This week, meet Teresa Castro, whose work is pictured above. The image is part of Castro's series "Pilgrimage," a personal collection of images shot while traveling along Interstate 5 from Los Angeles to Northern California. Castro's series has the feeling of a loose fashion narrative or stills from an indie flick, and she photographs her muse, friend Alexandra Sempel, in "in between" moments to evoke a narrative. You can see her full series in the Winter 2014 digital edition.
Be a part of our upcoming issue! We are seeking fresh photo essays and projects consisting of up to 10 images per entry. The Summer 2015 issue will be polybagged with 5,000 copies of PDN and sent to a distribution list of 5,000 top photography creatives. The issue will also be available at photography festivals and events throughout the year, and the digital edition will be promoted to PDN's network of 200,000 followers.
Visit www.emerging.pdncontests.com for all information on how to enter.

Visual Persuasion in the Digital Age: Webinar with Edward Schiappa

This webinar has some good insights into how we present ourselves online, and how visual images can be interpreted. It will get you thinking. And as a bonus, you can see the famous and extremely controversial "Daisy Spot" commercial from the 1964 presidential campaign, which was only aired once.

PDN Curator Awards: Deadline 9 April 2015

The Curator FIne-Art Awards aims to enrich the lives of undiscovered fine-art photographers, producing a group show for six artists and an award of $3,500 cash to one artist to fund his or her work.
PDN The Curator 2015: Photo by Alexander Hadjidakis

Last year's gallery show for The Curator showcased intriguing concepts across the board. Alexander Hadjidakis, winner of the Student Work category, presented his series "Other," in which he explored the concept of a post-racial world and the homogeneity of humankind. The mixed media project presents two types of composites: digital portraits created from multiple images, each shot by Hadjidakis (pictured left), alongside ambrotypes that combine historical images from the Library of Congress with his own imagery (pictured right). Hadjidakis displays them together to reinforce each subject's shared heritage and to connect the past, present and suppositional future.
Enter your fine-art work for the chance to be one of the six artists in this year's gallery show, print gallery in PDN and extended online gallery, in addition to a prize package from B&H, Moab Paper and PDN. One winner will receive $3,500 for his or her outstanding work.
See www.pdncuratorawards.com/about.shtml for all information on prizes.

Carrie Mae Weems talk: Monday, 2 February 2015

Carrie Mae Weems
Bunny and Charles Burson Distinguished Visiting Lecture
Color: Real and Imagined
6p Reception, Kemper Art Museum
6:30p Lecture, Steinberg Auditorium

Artist Carrie Mae Weems will deliver the Bunny and Charles Burson Distinguished Visiting Lecture, titled Color: Real and Imagined, as part of the Sam Fox School Public Lecture Series.

Over the past thirty years, Weems has worked toward developing a complex body of art that has employed photographs, text, fabric, audio, digital images, installation, and video. Her work has led her to investigate family relationships, gender roles, the histories of racism, sexism, class, and various political systems. All of her work reflects an overarching commitment to better understanding the present by closely examining history and the social fabric of identity. While African Americans are often her subjects, she wants "people of color to stand for the human multitudes" and for her art to resonate with all audiences.

Weems has received numerous awards and grants, ranging from the Prix de Roma to the US Department of State's Medal of Arts to a MacArthur Foundation "genius grant," which she discusses in the video above.
