Mary Baldwin College's online literary magazine is currently accepting submissions for our first annual publication of the year. We accept all areas of work, including digital files such as video recorded spoken word.  Each semester we look for fiction, non-fiction, drama, art, photography and poetry. Webster students are invited to submit their work for publication.

HELP Latent Image - Webster Works: 1 October 2014

Latent Image has signed up for Patch Neighborhood Center Head Start - GHHS Project ID 94 for Webster Works Worldwide. It has projects both inside and outside for volunteers to work on so it's a be a great opportunity for everyone in the club.

Volunteers will be assigned various beautification projects inside and outside the Head Start Center which includes painting cleaning, landscaping, picking up trash, setting up classrooms, and decorating the center.

We are very excited to bring recruiters (some Webster University alumni) representing over 80 companies and organizations to campus.

This event is not just for seniors.  There will be many employers ready to share information and discuss full-time, part-time, internship and volunteer opportunities.  Students are encouraged to attend whether they are freshmen, sophomores, juniors or graduating soon.  The Career Fair is an excellent opportunity for ALL Webster students to gather career related information that relates to their major.  Seniors may be looking for full-time employment, but sophomores and juniors can find out about internships and co-ops.  Freshmen can take the opportunity to talk with recruiters about the classes or experiences needed to prepare for a specific career.

30 Below Contest—2014

Narrative invites all writers, poets, visual artists, photographers, performers, and filmmakers between eighteen and thirty years old, to send us their best work. We’re looking for the traditional and the innovative, the true and the imaginary. We’re looking to encourage and promote the best young authors and artists we can find.

Photo essays of between five and twenty images, previously unpublished (including on sites like Flickr, your personal website, stock photography sites, etc.). Images should be submitted in a low-resolution .pdf or .jpg format; however, upon acceptance, images need to be provided with a resolution of at least 300 dpi, in a .tif, .jpg, or raw format that can be reproduced at 1,024 pixels wide. Captions or text should be included, either with the file containing the images or as a separate document in a .doc or .pdf format, with numbered captions corresponding to the similarly numbered photographs. Please provide your name, address, telephone number, and email address on the first page of the essay.

Awards: First Prize is $1,500, Second Prize is $750, Third Prize is $300, and ten finalists will receive $100 each. The prizewinners and finalists will be announced in Narrative.

Free St. Louis Area Flu Vaccine: Eden Seminary, 10 October 2014

The flu is a contagious illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the lungs, throat and nose. The flu affects millions of people each year and can lead to serious illness, or even death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year. So take a positive step to help reduce your chances of catching this season’s flu, and get a flu shot.

BJC HealthCare is offering free flu shot clinics again this year while supplies last. The Webster Groves community clinic will be held at Eden Theological Seminary – The Commons area on Friday, Oct. 10 from noon – 6 p.m.

Whether abandoned or discarded, lost, preserved, or memorialized, the objects and places that are evidence of our histories inspire photographs.

From an abandoned crumbling factory to a greasy pizza box left curbside, from an Incan ruin to a matted soft toy washed up at water's edge, initials carved in a tree, a soiled pile of personal effects waiting beneath an overpass, these are the clues to the treasure map of humanity. The humans who left them are palpable. 

We are drawn photograph these things before they rot or crumble or disappear entirely. They are evidence of the passage of time and, ultimately, of our mortality.

About the Juror
We are very pleased that Matthew Christopher has agreed to jury this exhibition. Over the last decade Matthew has photographed the decay of American infrastructure and the dimming of the American dream. His has exhibited widely in the United States in solo He will choose 40 photographs for exhibition in the gallery, and an additional 35 for the gallery's Online Annex.  All 75 photographs will be reproduced in an exhibition catalog.

News photographers were among the many journalists who faced dangerous situations as they documented the scene in Ferguson in the aftermath of the shooting of an unarmed teenager by a police officer there and the unrest that followed.

Several of those photographers will discuss the pictures they shot and the turmoil they witnessed. Among those whose work will be featured are St. Louis Post-Dispatch staff photographers Robert Cohen and J.B. Forbes, and Whitney Curtis, who was on assignment in Ferguson for The New York Times.

Their presentation will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, in Lee Auditorium on the lower level of the Missouri History Museum, 5700 Lindell Boulevard in Forest Park. The event is free of charge and is co-sponsored by the museum and the St. Louis Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Daniel Ballesteros will speak at Webster University in East Academic Building room 253/262 on Tuesday, 23 September, from noon - 1:20.

Daniel Ballesteros is a 2001 Webster photo alumnus, and is currently based in Brooklyn, NY, working with family members in St. Louis on his current project, "Midwest Filipino." In it he investigates the gap between his ethnic and cultural heritages. He is a Filipino-American from a family that began assimilating with midwest culture in the 1940's. He turned his camera on what remains of his family and the environment he grew up in to gain a greater understanding of how identity is formed and altered through generations.

Mr Ballesteros will show work, talk about his wet plate collodion process, his sponsored projects, his kit and how he gets his materials.

He is currently working as an Artist in Residence at the Luminary in St. Louis.

America After Ferguson: Invitation to a Town Hall

On Sunday, September 21st at 3:00 pm, Nine Network will work with PBS to produce a town hall in response to the events in Ferguson. America After Ferguson will be hosted by Gwen Ifill of the PBS NewsHour and taped the in the Lee Theater at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center.

The Nine Network is inviting community members and leaders with varying viewpoints to attend the town hall and participate in the conversation. A diverse and involved audience is the backbone of this program.

The town hall will broadcast on PBS stations across the country Friday, September 26 at 7pm (central).

Oliver O’HanlonEverloving

Interested in exploring the relationship between childhood memories and a sense of place, but contained in the present moment, O'Hanlon has been revisiting important locations which marked his life, with many of the same people. This process is a form of channeling the past to bring a narrative to childhood and adulthood. Recently, when in India, he had the feeling of turning a page. These photos are the physical result of this transition. Opened to his own past, he now can see the future. It is a celebration of life.

James Foley Memorial Scholarship
In International Photojournalism

In honor of the courageous men and women who risk their lives in order to report from the world's most dangerous places ieiMedia has established the James Foley Memorial Scholarship in memory of the photojournalist who was tragically executed while covering the war in Syria.

This $5000 photojournalism scholarship covers tuition, program fees and meals for participation in our Urbino program, jointly sponsored by James Madison University and Iowa State University. The winner will work with two award-winning photojournalists in an experiential program that runs through the month of June 2015. The recipient is responsible for his/her own airfare.

To enter the competition you must submit a link to an online photographic portfolio as well as a short letter explaining why an international reporting experience is important for your education. The portfolio should be well organized and show evidence of curiosity about other groups or cultures. The letter should not exceed 300 words.

The judging will be done by a jury of professional photojournalists including former White House Photographer and Washington Post staff photographer Susan Biddle as well as Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Dennis Chamberlin.

PAINTING: Reconsidered, DeconstructedThis all media juried exhibition asks artists to consider how you use paint as a material as well as an object. Works submitted might address paint in a static, object-based way, or be about the action of painting as well as the documentation of that action Works in other media-such as digital media, drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture­-that explore, reconsider or deconstruct painting and/or the idea of painting are welcome. All explorations & interpretations of this theme are invited. All styles and techniques encouraged. 

EXHIBITION SPACE & DATES
Art Saint Louis Gallery in downtown St. Louis, MO. Exhibition dates: January 17-February 29, 2015. Free opening reception on Saturday, January 17, 2015, 6-8 p.m.

ELIGIBILITYOpen to artists 21 years of age and older living in the St. Louis, Missouri region and surrounding 200-mile radius. Chicago, IL and Kansas City, MO are not eligible.

Stefanie Jacobson Kirkland, artist, educator and Director of Exhibitions, Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design, St. Louis, MO; and B.j. Vogt, artist, independent curator, St. Louis, MO.

Stephanie Jacobson Kirkland received her MFA in painting from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco, CA. She received her BFA at Syracuse University in New York and studied with Syracuse University in Florence, Italy and the American University based in Corciano, Italy. Kirkland has shown nationally and is collected privately. In addition to teaching, she is currently the Exhibitions Coordinator at Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design, St. Louis, MO.

B.j. Vogt is an artist/independent curator based in St. Louis, where he received a MFA with an emphasis in Sculpture from Washington University in St. Louis (2006). He is the recipient of a Critical Mass for the Arts Creative Stimulus award, a Santo Foundation Individual Artist grant, and has attended residencies at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris, France, and the Klondike Institute for Art and Culture in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada. His work has been featured in group and solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, St. Louis, and Dawson City. As an independent curator, he has been involved with several DIY projects including Maps Contemporary Art Space, the Open Lot Collective, and the Transients.

SPECIFICATIONS  
Limit 2 original artworks in all media, styles, techniques. Artwork must be completed between 2012-2014. NO ceiling installed work. NO works that sit directly on floor. Sculpture that otherwise would sit on floor must have platform provided by artist that elevates work min. 24" up off of floor. NO works that are nailed, pinned, tacked, taped, velcroed, painted on, glued, adhered, or affixed directly to/on Gallery walls. 2-d works must be framed or pre-approved presentation. Gallery-wrapped canvas OK. No loose plexi that is clipped or nailed to wall. Size limits: Final installation size not to exceed 6' (72") wide or 7' (84") high. 3-d, oversized or installation works must be installed by artist under direction of ASL Artistic Director. 3-d works that are extremely fragile, very small, unstable or do not sit flat on a pedestal are discouraged. Artist must provide all equipment necessary to present video or artwork requiring electricity, incl. cords, DVD player, monitor, etc. Works not previously exhibited in any exhibit in Art Saint Louis Gallery. Works not exhibited in any juried exhibit in St. Louis region during 6 months prior to exhibit dates. 

JURYING, FORMATTING & MATERIALS REQUIRED
Judging is done by JPEGs on CD or by email. DVD only accepted for video entries only. Limit 2 JPEGs per artwork: 1 full view & either 1 detail OR 1 alternate view. JPEGs on ONE (1) CD that MUST be readable by both Mac & PC. JPEGs must be RGB Color (NO grayscale), 300 dpi preferred, minimum 800 pixels. Title each JPEG file to correspond to image # on the entry form using the following format: yourlastname.image1. Include printed image reference sheet with thumbnail-sized images of each artwork on CD. Do not include any unrelated files, folders or documents on CD. Please, NO iPhoto folders! Label CD with artist's full name and place in protective case for mailing. Submissions that do not comply with rules of entry will not be presented to the juror. Works selected for exhibition that are not accurately depicted by JPEGs may be removed from exhibit at Artistic Director's discretion.

Label CD with Sharpie marker with artist's full name and place in protective case for mailing. Do not send more than one CD. IF you are emailing your entry to robin@artstlouis.org, fee must be paid in advance (by mail or PayPal) and entry form scanned/emailed or mailed. Submissions that do not comply with rules of entry will not be presented to the Jurors. Works selected for exhibition that are not accurately depicted by JPEGs may be removed from exhibit at Artistic Director's discretion.

THE JURYING PROCESS
The method by which ALL exhibitions are juried at Art Saint Louis is always a fair and blind (anonymous) process. What this means is that at no time before or during the jurying process do our Jurors know the names of entering artists. The Jurors are presented all entrants' JPEGs in an anonymous digital image presentation and the only information provided to them pertains to the artwork and includes the following: artwork title, year, media, dimensions, and method of presentation (displayed on the wall, sits on a pedestal). Jurors are never shown the names of any artists. All artworks that you submit for jurying are presented one after the other in the presentation that the jurors view. So, if you are artist #25, your artworks/entries are in the presentation after artist #24 and before artist #26. From the jurying presentation and information provided about the artworks, the jurors make their selections for the final exhibit. Artwork selection decisions are in part based on a set of specific jurying instructions & criteria relating to the theme of the exhibit as well as specific conditions & rules of the Gallery. For non-thematic exhibitions, a well-rounded exhibit is based on the Jurors' aesthetics along with general exhibition criteria established for all exhibits by Art Saint Louis' Artistic Director. This is a blind process and at no time are the Jurors shown entrants' names, and oftentimes they do not even see names for selected artists until they arrive to the Gallery to view the final exhibit on the Gallery walls. Ours is a fair jurying process.  


SALES & INSURANCE
Artworks are insured at 50% of retail value during exhibit. Artist responsible for work in transit to/from ASL. Works may be for sale or not for sale. All sales are made through Art Saint Louis with 70% of sale to Artist and 30% commission on work sold to Art Saint Louis. Sold artworks must remain in exhibit through end of show. Artist is responsible for delivery of sold work to buyer at conclusion of exhibit.

FRAMING & FINAL PRESENTATION
All work selected for exhibit must be delivered to Gallery ready to install. 2-d work must be framed & equipped with hanging wire stretched across back of artwork. NO saw tooth hangers, clip-style frames or keyhole mounts (often found on photos on metal). French Cleat mounts ok (notify in advance of delivery) Paintings may be framed, strip-framed or gallery-wrapped. NO works that are nailed, pinned, tacked, taped, velcroed, painted on, glued, adhered, or affixed directly to/on Gallery walls. 2-d works must be framed or pre-approved presentation. Gallery-wrapped canvas OK. No loose plexi that is clipped or nailed to wall. Oversized, heavy, or installation work must be installed by artist under direction of Artistic Director. Video must be presented on min. 9" monitor; monitor weight not to exceed 20 lbs. Artworks requiring electricity: Artist must provide all cords, cord protectors & equipment required to present work. Specific installation requirements must be resolved in advance with directions/devices provided by artist. Art Saint Louis reserves the right to install accepted works in a manner deemed necessary for a well-designed exhibition or for security purposes.

AWARDS Five non-cash Awards of Excellence will be selected by the Jurors for this exhibit. Award recipients will be eligible for our "Honor Awards 2016" exhibit (Summer 2016). Curator: TBA.

ENTRY FORMThe entry form for this exhibit is required with all entries and is downloadable directly from our website here. Entries submitted without form will be returned to artist unprocessed. All entries require: entry form filled out in full (please do not leave any areas on the form blank! Please fill in the form with info for each artwork to include: title, year completed, final framed size, sale price, or, if not for sale, 50% of retail value for insurance purposes), plus your entry fee, JPEGs on CD, and printed image reference sheet. 

The Image Reference Sheet is for staff use only and is simply what it says it is--a sheet with images that we will use as a reference, a visual reference so that we know each image is, in case there is something mislabeled on your CD or an image happens to be upside-down (these things happen). Please check to make sure that your JPEGs are all properly oriented in correct viewing position before you save them to the CD or email them to us.

Be sure that you provide all information requested on the entry form: Your contact info, including phone & email, address, and signature. For each entry: artwork title, year completed, dimensions (if 2-d, we need the artwork's final framed size; if 3-d, then height x width x depth), sale price (or, if not for sale, 50% retail value is required for insurance purposes). The requested information on your entry form is required for entry and incomplete entry forms will be returned to artist unprocessed.

DEADLINE / SEND ENTRY
October 24, 2014 is the  deadline for ALL entries. MAIL or hand-deliver* (*hand-deliver during our business hours, please): entry fee, entry form (downloadable from our website here), JPEGs on CD, printed image reference sheet to: "Painting: Reconsidered, Deconstructed," c/o Art Saint Louis, 1223 Pine Street, St. Louis, MO 63103. Emailed entries also include entry form, JPEGs, image reference sheet (if possible), payment either by PayPal or by mail--can mail entry form with payment, if that is easier for you. Email entries accepted by October 24, 2014 to robin@artstlouis.org.

VOLUNTEERINGAs a non-profit artists' organization, Art Saint Louis relies on volunteer support to help present our exhibitions. All exhibiting artists are required to volunteer 4 hours time and/or work to the production of this exhibit; artists may contribute food or goods for the opening reception or may buy-out volunteer time ($20 donation or value). Cash, contributions, in-kind goods or services are tax-deductible to the extent allowable by law.

PUBLICITYArt Saint Louis reserves the right to photograph all exhibited works for unlimited web use and publicity purposes. JPEGs submitted for jurying of accepted/exhibited artworks will be used for publicity purposes for this exhibition and additional Gallery publicity.

DELIVERY FOR EXHIBIT & PICK-UP @ END OF EXHIBIT
Artworks juried into this exhibit are to be hand-delivered to Art Saint Louis on December 30, 2014 or January 2-3, 2015, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and picked-up at the end of the show, February 20-21, 2015, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Exhibited works may not be removed from ASL prior to 9 a.m. February 20. ALL works must be removed from Gallery by 4 p.m. February 21.

In Close Up Photography in Nature, best-selling authors and nature photography pros, John and Barbara Gerlach, share the tips and techniques necessary to successfully photograph the beauty all around you.

John and Barbara Gerlach are professional nature photographers and teachers who have taken more than a million wildlife images since 1978 and run seminars and workshops all over the world. Their pictures have been published in Outdoor Photographer, Audubon, Popular Photography, National Wildlife, Sierra, Natural History, Petersen's Photographic, Ranger Rick, Birder's World, as well as books published by National Geographic Society, Sierra Club and others. John Gerlach is currently the Associate Editor for Nature Photographer magazine and together they have written three additional books for Focal Press: Digital Wildlife Photography, Digital Landscape Photography and Digital Nature Photography. They are currently working on yet another book, Outdoor Flash Photography.
