PAINTING: Reconsidered, DeconstructedThis all media juried exhibition asks artists to consider how you use paint as a material as well as an object. Works submitted might address paint in a static, object-based way, or be about the action of painting as well as the documentation of that action Works in other media-such as digital media, drawing, photography, printmaking, sculptureĀ­-that explore, reconsider or deconstruct painting and/or the idea of painting are welcome. All explorations & interpretations of this theme are invited. All styles and techniques encouraged. 

EXHIBITION SPACE & DATES
Art Saint Louis Gallery in downtown St. Louis, MO. Exhibition dates: January 17-February 29, 2015. Free opening reception on Saturday, January 17, 2015, 6-8 p.m.

ELIGIBILITYOpen to artists 21 years of age and older living in the St. Louis, Missouri region and surrounding 200-mile radius. Chicago, IL and Kansas City, MO are not eligible.

DEADLINE
The deadline to submit works for this exhibit is October 24, 2014. No entries will be accepted after the deadline.

OUR JURORS
Stefanie Jacobson Kirkland, artist, educator and Director of Exhibitions, Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design, St. Louis, MO; and B.j. Vogt, artist, independent curator, St. Louis, MO.

Stephanie Jacobson Kirkland received her MFA in painting from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco, CA. She received her BFA at Syracuse University in New York and studied with Syracuse University in Florence, Italy and the American University based in Corciano, Italy. Kirkland has shown nationally and is collected privately. In addition to teaching, she is currently the Exhibitions Coordinator at Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design, St. Louis, MO.

B.j. Vogt is an artist/independent curator based in St. Louis, where he received a MFA with an emphasis in Sculpture from Washington University in St. Louis (2006). He is the recipient of a Critical Mass for the Arts Creative Stimulus award, a Santo Foundation Individual Artist grant, and has attended residencies at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris, France, and the Klondike Institute for Art and Culture in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, Canada. His work has been featured in group and solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, St. Louis, and Dawson City. As an independent curator, he has been involved with several DIY projects including Maps Contemporary Art Space, the Open Lot Collective, and the Transients.

SPECIFICATIONS  
Limit 2 original artworks in all media, styles, techniques. Artwork must be completed between 2012-2014. NO ceiling installed work. NO works that sit directly on floor. Sculpture that otherwise would sit on floor must have platform provided by artist that elevates work min. 24" up off of floor. NO works that are nailed, pinned, tacked, taped, velcroed, painted on, glued, adhered, or affixed directly to/on Gallery walls. 2-d works must be framed or pre-approved presentation. Gallery-wrapped canvas OK. No loose plexi that is clipped or nailed to wall. Size limits: Final installation size not to exceed 6' (72") wide or 7' (84") high. 3-d, oversized or installation works must be installed by artist under direction of ASL Artistic Director. 3-d works that are extremely fragile, very small, unstable or do not sit flat on a pedestal are discouraged. Artist must provide all equipment necessary to present video or artwork requiring electricity, incl. cords, DVD player, monitor, etc. Works not previously exhibited in any exhibit in Art Saint Louis Gallery. Works not exhibited in any juried exhibit in St. Louis region during 6 months prior to exhibit dates. 

JURYING, FORMATTING & MATERIALS REQUIRED
Judging is done by JPEGs on CD or by email. DVD only accepted for video entries only. Limit 2 JPEGs per artwork: 1 full view & either 1 detail OR 1 alternate view. JPEGs on ONE (1) CD that MUST be readable by both Mac & PC. JPEGs must be RGB Color (NO grayscale), 300 dpi preferred, minimum 800 pixels. Title each JPEG file to correspond to image # on the entry form using the following format: yourlastname.image1. Include printed image reference sheet with thumbnail-sized images of each artwork on CD. Do not include any unrelated files, folders or documents on CD. Please, NO iPhoto folders! Label CD with artist's full name and place in protective case for mailing. Submissions that do not comply with rules of entry will not be presented to the juror. Works selected for exhibition that are not accurately depicted by JPEGs may be removed from exhibit at Artistic Director's discretion.

Label CD with Sharpie marker with artist's full name and place in protective case for mailing. Do not send more than one CD. IF you are emailing your entry to robin@artstlouis.org, fee must be paid in advance (by mail or PayPal) and entry form scanned/emailed or mailed. Submissions that do not comply with rules of entry will not be presented to the Jurors. Works selected for exhibition that are not accurately depicted by JPEGs may be removed from exhibit at Artistic Director's discretion.

THE JURYING PROCESS
The method by which ALL exhibitions are juried at Art Saint Louis is always a fair and blind (anonymous) process. What this means is that at no time before or during the jurying process do our Jurors know the names of entering artists. The Jurors are presented all entrants' JPEGs in an anonymous digital image presentation and the only information provided to them pertains to the artwork and includes the following: artwork title, year, media, dimensions, and method of presentation (displayed on the wall, sits on a pedestal). Jurors are never shown the names of any artists. All artworks that you submit for jurying are presented one after the other in the presentation that the jurors view. So, if you are artist #25, your artworks/entries are in the presentation after artist #24 and before artist #26. From the jurying presentation and information provided about the artworks, the jurors make their selections for the final exhibit. Artwork selection decisions are in part based on a set of specific jurying instructions & criteria relating to the theme of the exhibit as well as specific conditions & rules of the Gallery. For non-thematic exhibitions, a well-rounded exhibit is based on the Jurors' aesthetics along with general exhibition criteria established for all exhibits by Art Saint Louis' Artistic Director. This is a blind process and at no time are the Jurors shown entrants' names, and oftentimes they do not even see names for selected artists until they arrive to the Gallery to view the final exhibit on the Gallery walls. Ours is a fair jurying process.  


SALES & INSURANCE
Artworks are insured at 50% of retail value during exhibit. Artist responsible for work in transit to/from ASL. Works may be for sale or not for sale. All sales are made through Art Saint Louis with 70% of sale to Artist and 30% commission on work sold to Art Saint Louis. Sold artworks must remain in exhibit through end of show. Artist is responsible for delivery of sold work to buyer at conclusion of exhibit.

FRAMING & FINAL PRESENTATION

All work selected for exhibit must be delivered to Gallery ready to install. 2-d work must be framed & equipped with hanging wire stretched across back of artwork. NO saw tooth hangers, clip-style frames or keyhole mounts (often found on photos on metal). French Cleat mounts ok (notify in advance of delivery) Paintings may be framed, strip-framed or gallery-wrapped. NO works that are nailed, pinned, tacked, taped, velcroed, painted on, glued, adhered, or affixed directly to/on Gallery walls. 2-d works must be framed or pre-approved presentation. Gallery-wrapped canvas OK. No loose plexi that is clipped or nailed to wall. Oversized, heavy, or installation work must be installed by artist under direction of Artistic Director. Video must be presented on min. 9" monitor; monitor weight not to exceed 20 lbs. Artworks requiring electricity: Artist must provide all cords, cord protectors & equipment required to present work. Specific installation requirements must be resolved in advance with directions/devices provided by artist. Art Saint Louis reserves the right to install accepted works in a manner deemed necessary for a well-designed exhibition or for security purposes.

AWARDS Five non-cash Awards of Excellence will be selected by the Jurors for this exhibit. Award recipients will be eligible for our "Honor Awards 2016" exhibit (Summer 2016). Curator: TBA.

ENTRY FORMThe entry form for this exhibit is required with all entries and is downloadable directly from our website here. Entries submitted without form will be returned to artist unprocessed. All entries require: entry form filled out in full (please do not leave any areas on the form blank! Please fill in the form with info for each artwork to include: title, year completed, final framed size, sale price, or, if not for sale, 50% of retail value for insurance purposes), plus your entry fee, JPEGs on CD, and printed image reference sheet. 

The Image Reference Sheet is for staff use only and is simply what it says it is--a sheet with images that we will use as a reference, a visual reference so that we know each image is, in case there is something mislabeled on your CD or an image happens to be upside-down (these things happen). Please check to make sure that your JPEGs are all properly oriented in correct viewing position before you save them to the CD or email them to us.

Be sure that you provide all information requested on the entry form: Your contact info, including phone & email, address, and signature. For each entry: artwork title, year completed, dimensions (if 2-d, we need the artwork's final framed size; if 3-d, then height x width x depth), sale price (or, if not for sale, 50% retail value is required for insurance purposes). The requested information on your entry form is required for entry and incomplete entry forms will be returned to artist unprocessed.

VOLUNTEERINGAs a non-profit artists' organization, Art Saint Louis relies on volunteer support to help present our exhibitions. All exhibiting artists are required to volunteer 4 hours time and/or work to the production of this exhibit; artists may contribute food or goods for the opening reception or may buy-out volunteer time ($20 donation or value). Cash, contributions, in-kind goods or services are tax-deductible to the extent allowable by law.

PUBLICITYArt Saint Louis reserves the right to photograph all exhibited works for unlimited web use and publicity purposes. JPEGs submitted for jurying of accepted/exhibited artworks will be used for publicity purposes for this exhibition and additional Gallery publicity.

DELIVERY FOR EXHIBIT & PICK-UP @ END OF EXHIBIT

Artworks juried into this exhibit are to be hand-delivered to Art Saint Louis on December 30, 2014 or January 2-3, 2015, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and picked-up at the end of the show, February 20-21, 2015, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Exhibited works may not be removed from ASL prior to 9 a.m. February 20. ALL works must be removed from Gallery by 4 p.m. February 21.

This exhibit is presented by Art Saint Louis and is supported with funding from Missouri Arts Council and Regional Arts Commission.

We encourage you to send in your entry before the deadline. Entries postmarked by October 24, but not received in the mail by Art Saint Louis by October 28 will be returned to artist. Emailed entries must be received by end of day October 24. No exceptions.

Jurying Notifications: Jury results will be emailed to ALL entering artists by November 21, 2014.

Accepted works delivered to Art Saint Louis: Dec. 30 & January 2-3, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Install exhibit: January 6-7, 2015
