Gregory Crewdson film: 1-3 February 2013

Film Series: ‘Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters’ Feb. 1-3

The Webster University Film Series presents Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters (Ben Shapiro, 2012) the weekend of Feb. 1-3, 7:30 p.m., in the Moore Auditorium.

An acclaimed photographer with the eye of a filmmaker, Gregory Crewdson has created some of the most gorgeously haunting pictures in the history of the medium. His meticulously composed, large-scale images are stunning narratives of small-town American life—moviescapes crystallized into a single frame.

While the photographs are staged with crews that rival many feature film productions, Crewdson takes inspiration as much from his own dreams and fantasies as the worlds of Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch, Edward Hopper and Diane Arbus. Crewdson’s imagery has also infiltrated the pop culture landscape—including his inimitable Six Feet Under ads and Yo La Tengo album art. Shot over a decade with unprecedented access, Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters beautifully bares the artist’s process—and it’s as mesmerizing and riveting as the images themselves. For more please visit http://www.gregorycrewdsonmovie.com.

Admission is $6 for the general public; $5 for senior adults (60 +), students from other schools and Webster University (WU) alumni; $4 for WU faculty and staff; and free to Webster University students and SOC faculty and staff.

Gallery 210: Thursday, 7 February 2013

Rhythm, Line and Form: The Sculpture of John Medwedeff
February 7- April 13, 2013
A reception for the artist will be held February 7 from 5:30 PM and continuing to 7:30 PM. The artist will give a gallery talk at 6:15 PM.

Gallery 210 is pleased to present a solo exhibition by sculptor and metalsmith John Medwedeff of Medwedeff Forge and Design. The exhibition will feature selected sculptures and design maquettes, drawings and photographs for large-scale projects. The exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of Medwedeff¹s 25-year career as an artist and metalsmith.

In addition to large-scale sculptures, most about 20-feet tall, Medwedeff and his crew do architectural metal-work ranging from new designs to repair and replacement of classic metal-work. At any given time, the staff can be working on several different projects.

"Blacksmithing, traditionally, has involved journeymen training at one forge for a few years and then moving on to another several times before starting their own," Medwedeff said.

Landscapes and rivers from his youth in Tennessee and adult life in the Midwest influence the shape and form of John's work. Childhood travels to Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Egypt, Greece, Germany, India, England and Alaska exposed him to a range of culture, geology, art, and architecture.

Gallery 210 is on the University of Missouri-St. Louis at 44 East Drive, TCC between the North UM-St. Louis Metro Station and Touhill Performing Arts Center. The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The gallery phone is (314) 516-5976; and email is gallery@umsl.edu. For parking locations, directions, and campus map please visit http://gallery210.umsl.edu.

Call for Work: Deadline 25-26 January 2013

Framations Art Gallery encourages artists to enter a new juried exhibit focusing on nature - and our impact. "Leaving No Trace: An Exhibition on Nature and Our Impact" aims to bring attention to the beauty and grandeur of nature, which can only be enjoyed if man avoids the temptation to ruin it.  Many parks have posted signs that encourage their visitors to leave what they find such as rocks, plants, etc. They also encourage visitors to take all the items they bring, such as trash and to leave the scene unharmed and untarnished.  These things seem obvious to some, but are often ignored. Artwork should explore the aspect of pristine nature, where man has abided by this rule as well as the affects of what we leave behind and how we have impacted nature. Artists are encouraged to use their own interpretation to arrive at their imagery.

This exhibit will be on display February 1 - March 7. Artists can enter up to three pieces, with an entry fee of $8.00 per piece. Entries must be hand delivered to Framations Jan 25 and 26 from 10-6 and Jan  27 from  12 – 5. This exhibit is open to artists 18 years of age or older who live in the St. Louis region are eligible.

Works in all 2D and 3D media can be entered. 3D works must fit on a pedestal of 18” x 18”. Work must have been completed within the last three years (2010 – 2012). All work must be Original work not completed under instruction. Works previously exhibited in any juried exhibition at Framations cannot be entered. Work must be suitably framed, wired and ready to hang. Some pieces, such as gallery wrap canvases, do not require frames.  Framations reserves the right to reject work that is not  properly prepared for hanging or is in any way unstable. Sizes, including frames, are not to exceed 30” x 40”. There will be Awards announced at the Opening Reception on Feb 1 from 6-8pm. Artists will be notified concerning acceptance within 24 hours of jury process.

The Juror for this exhibit is Laura Helling, Executive Director of the Foundry Art Centre in St. Charles, MO. Dependant on the juror’s decision, an artist may find that all, some, or possible none of their pieces are chosen to be a part of the exhibition. Framations strives to promote excellent exhibitions that are juried to fit the exhibit space but also display the best quality work chosen from what is entered. Artists of all skill levels are encouraged to enter their work. Please see full entry details on www.framations.com.
