A prolific and multifaceted artist, Gordon Parks (1912-2006) is best known for his work as a documentary photographer for LIFE magazine. He was also one of the first African American film directors to break into Hollywood.

Through photographs, film clips, and interviews with the artist, his family, colleagues, and associates, this engaging documentary looks at the life and work of Gordon Parks. It is a revealing portrait of Parks as an artist, a family man, and as an observer and participant on the front lines of American history in the 20th century. Produced by Denzel Washington for HBO, the film was made to complement the traveling exhibition Half Past Autumn: The Art of Gordon Parks, a retrospective of Parks's photography. Narrated by Alfre Woodard.

The Soulard Art Market and Contemporary Gallery is calling for submissions to "This One's For you, " a juried exhibition of local artists.

Exhibition runs from August 14th, 2008 through September 7th, 2008.

S.A.M. is looking to represent 30 artists in our Contemporary Art Gallery, exhibiting with our 14 resident artists. Each artist can submit up to 3 Original Works.

Submission Guidelines: Artwork should represent history in Saint Louis, Anheuser-Busch,
Clydesdales, Prohibition, etc.

- No more than 3 Pieces of work to be juried.
- Framed 2D artwork must be ready for hanging (no saw tooth hangers).
- All artwork for consideration MUST be submitted via JPEG/JPG image.
- Accompanying e-mail must include title/ media/measurements, contact e-mail address, and phone number.
- File size for each work cannot exceed 500kb and must be attached in jpg (jpeg) format.
- Website address submissions will NOT be accepted.
- File Name should be named as such: Artists Name_Name of Piece_Dimensions.jpg (John Smith_Artwork1_16x20.jpg)
- Late entries after the closing date of submission will NOT be accepted, no exceptions.

Chesterfield Arts Photo Contest: Dealine 1 September 2008

Chesterfield Arts is hosting a photography contest featuring public art in the Chesterfield Area. The contest is open to the public and has been developed to help build awareness of the great sculpture we have on display throughout the city. Creativity counts, so give us your most creative photographs to describe these works of art. Winners will be selected in each category and recognized through a special exhibit and awards reception at Chesterfield Arts this fall. All ages are invited to participate.

Internship at the Garden: Deadline 29 July 2008

Are you a senior graduating in August? Are you a recent graduate still looking for a job, but would like to gain more experience?

The Photography Intern at the Missouri Botanical Garden will function as a staff photographer, shooting events, grip-and-grins, landscape beauty shots, macros, and editorial images. They will also be trained to coordinate photo requests and archive/process digital files. Recent interns have had their photos published in the Garden's Bulletin magazine, ads in a variety of newspapers and magazines, and on Garden posters, flyers, and other support pieces.

Qualifications:

• Must be a senior or have completed your B.A. in Photography and have your own transportation.
• Must have your own DIGITAL SLR. Proficiency in Photoshop for the Mac platform, scanning, and color correction.
• Must have cell phone.

CALL FOR ARTISTS

Art Coop is looking for 40 artists to exhibit their work at "MySOL," our August art show opening August 8th.

Artists are invited to submit three works each in any medium or mixed media to exhibit together in celebration of the summer sun. (This is not a theme show. Your work need have nothing to do with the sun.) For works submitted to be hung on the wall, each artist is generally limited to approximately 6’ feet of horizontal wall space for the three works. Exceptions will be made for larger works where necessary.

Art will be exhibited in the Central West End at 4515 Olive and 462 North Taylor (three doors down the street). Art exhibited on Olive Street will hang from August 8 to 10. Art exhibited on Taylor will hang from August 8 to September 6. Please request a location when submitting art to this CFA.

Art Coop charges no gallery commission on sales of your work, but there is a $25 entry fee per artist (not per work). Exhibition is limited to the first 40 artists accepted. Deadline for received submissions is July 25. But don’t delay submitting. Submissions will be reviewed as received and accepted or rejected only until we have 40 artists accepted. 11 artist slots are already filled. To submit your work for review, send an email to artcoop@live.com with photos of your work attached. Or provide a website address where we can see your work. In your submission please include your phone number(s) and the approximate size of each submitted work.

Art Saint Louis is currently accepting pre-registration for our next juried exhibit, "America the Beautiful and Beyond." The deadline for entry forms & fee is July 19. Artworks are to be delivered for jurying July 25-26.

For this exhibit, Art Saint Louis seeks artworks in all media & styles that explore life in America through our diverse inhabitants, culture, environments & politics. Works that focus on America-the good, bad and the ugly.

The exhibit is presented at Art Saint Louis August 11-October 9, 2008 with an opening reception August 9.

Serving as jurors for this show are: Roseann Weiss, Director of Cultural Programs and Public Art Initiatives; and Brian Purlee, Production Director, The Black Repertory Theater, St. Louis.

To submit works for consideration, artists must be at least 21 & reside within the 200-mile radius of the St. Louis metro area. This exhibit is juried from actual artwork, limit 2 created in the past 2 years (2006-2008). All works must be ready to install.

New photo class for Fall 2

PHOT 4190.01, Topics in Digital Imaging: Digital Asset Management, with Bill Barrett, M/W, 12:00 to 1:50 p.m. in SV204. This is a Fall 2 class.

The syllabus from this past spring is online at http://www.webster.edu/~barrettb/courses/dam.html. I'll be updating it a bit, but that is substantially what we will be doing.

Students who took it this past spring said that it should be a requirement for our program. It isn't, but I suspect that Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, the principle software we use in the class, is going to be an indispensable tool for the professional photographer.

9th Annual Photography Exhibit

The Village of Elsah Museum announces the 2008 Annual Photography Exhibit to be held July 26 to October 18, 2008. The exhibit is entitled “Colors and Contrasts of Elsah” and will be held in the Museum building, known as the Village Hall, at 26 LaSalle Street, Elsah, Illinois. The purpose of the exhibit is to celebrate and foster an appreciation of the beauty and unique qualities of Elsah and the immediate area in every season.

Photographers, amateur and professional, are invited to make submissions to the exhibit and participate in the purchase prize portion of the exhibit. As in previous years, the photographers may sell their displayed photographs to the public retaining all proceeds.

This is the 9th annual exhibit and the seventh year for which there will be a first place purchase prize. The first place prize will be purchased by the Museum for $150 for the matted print as well as permission to use the photograph in publicity for the 2008 and 2009 exhibits as well as printed material generated as a result of the current or next year's exhibit. There will be certificates to recognize additional works.

In order to recognize places of interest in the entire Elsah corporate limits, in 2008, there will be two first place purchase prizes based on location. One prize will be for a photograph taken in the valley area and one on the bluffs, either on the Principia College Campus, Eliestoun or other familiar locations close to these geographic areas.

Works submitted for the purchase prize will be judged on the following criteria:

• Expression of the theme, “Colors and Contrasts of Elsah”
• Quality of the photographic composition and quality of the photographic reproduction.
  

In order for photographs to be considered for the purchase prize, photographs submitted (silver gelatin, color, digitally or photographically produced) must be at least 8 X 10 print size and matted (mat not to exceed 16 X 20).

In addition, photographs may be submitted for the exhibition only, not participating in the purchase prize activity. Please include the words, “Exhibition only” on the back of the mat or on the transmittal sheet. Photographs will only be accepted that are on theme and taken in the Village of Elsah or the immediate area.

It is highly recommended, but not required, that the matted print be either framed or in a clear covering. The Museum will not be responsible for damage to photographs without a clear covering. Matted prints may be displayed using double sided tape on the back side. All framed photographs must have a wire on the back for hanging. Those framed without a wire or other open hanger will not be exhibited.

Each photographer may submit up to four photographs. Information on the back of the mat must include the name of the photographer, title, price (if for sale), mailing address and contact numbers. Also, please include a temporary, removable, title card without the photographer’s name to be affixed to the front of the photograph for purposes of judging.

Submissions must be received by July 11, 2008, delivered to the Museum during open hours or mailed to P.O. Box 28, Elsah, Illinois 62028. It is the responsibility of the photographer to arrange for the return of his/her photographs after the exhibit. Those not picked up within a month shall become the property of the Village of Elsah.

Judging will occur prior to the opening of the show on July 26, 2008. Winners will be notified in writing or email. It is not necessary to be present in the area to receive recognition. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2008 from 1 to 4. Refreshments will be served. The Museum is pleased to announce that Janice Nesser-Chu, a working photographer/artist and photography professor, will judge the 2008 exhibit.
