Speaker tonight, Monday 29 Octobeer

Human Rights Speaker Oct. 29: Constantine on Stateless People

Greg Constantine, an award-winning photojournalist currently based in Southeast Asia, will discuss the human rights issue of statelessness during a visit to Webster University Monday, Oct. 29.
Constantine’s work documents the plight of the stateless, or those who lack legal nationality to any country in the world. His most recent project, Nowhere People, documents the struggles of the Rohingya minority ethnic group in Burma, who have been stripped of legal citizenship by the government.
Constantine will discuss the issue of statelessness from his perspective as an American-born photojournalist. Through images and personal stories, his lecture will illustrate how this human rights violation impacts stateless populations throughout Asia.
Event Details
Lecture: 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 29, 2012
Webster University’s Sunnen Lounge
Free and open to the public
Parking is available at the Garden Park Plaza, 568 Garden Avenue [Campus map]
To learn more about the Institute for Human Rights and Humanitarian Studies, visit www.webster.edu/humanrights. Constantine’s personal Web site is available at www.gregconstantine.com.
Statelessness and the Year of International Human Rights
Statelessness is highlighted by Webster’s “Year of International Human Rights” (YIHR), which focuses on the rights of indigenous peoples and stateless persons during the 2012/2013 academic year. The YIHR is coordinated by Webster’s Institute for Human Rights and Humanitarian Studies.
Now in its fifth year, the YIHR includes invited lectures, a common reading book, a film series, and a two-day human rights conference centered on the human rights theme.
Approximately 12 million people are stateless – they are not citizens to any country – despite the human “right to a nationality” that is outlined in international law. In fact, statelessness has been described as a “forgotten human rights crisis” that leads to exploitation and additional rights violations.
People without legal nationality often suffer from human rights abuse including the inability to travel, to work legally, to receive a basic education, and to access healthcare. The stateless are also vulnerable to abuse by government officials, including the police and immigration officers, and are at high risk for human trafficking and other rights-related problems.

THE JURYING PROCESS
If you are not already aware, jurying an exhibition at Art Saint Louis is always an anonymous process. What this means is that at no time before or during the jurying process do our jurors know the names of entering artists. The jurors are presented all entrants' JPEGs in an anonymous digital image presentation and the only information provided to them about the artwork is the following: artwork title, year, media, dimensions & method of presentation (i.e. wall, pedestal, floor). Jurors are never shown the names of any artists. Both works that you submit for jurying are presented one after the other in the presentation the jurors view. So, if you are artist #25, your two entries are in the presentation after artist #24 and before artist #26. From the jurying presentation and info provided about the artworks, the jurors make their selections for the final exhibit. Artwork selection decisions are in part based on a set of specific jurying instructions & criteria relating to the theme of the exhibit as well as specific conditions & rules of the Gallery. At no time are the jurors shown entrants' names and oftentimes do not even see names for selected artists until they arrive to the Gallery to view final exhibit.

Benedict J. Fernandez:
A Life's Work in Photography

Benedict J. Fernandez

Pro-Vietnam war demonstration, 1970

26 October - 21 November 2012

Opening Reception Friday, 26 October, 5-7 pm

With a conversation with Mr. Fernandez via teleconference on Friday, 26 October, at 3 pm in Sverdrup 101

The Wall Street journal wrote of this exhibition (which is currently also on view at the Robert Anderson Gallery in New York City), "(This is) a sampling of work from Benedict J. Fernandez's long career in photojournalism. Mr. Fernandez (b. 1936) does not belong to a photo agency and does not shoot on assignment. He self-selects his projects and, since he is not working against a deadline, works on them until he is satisfied; as a consequence, his pictures frequently have an art photography quality. Unlike much photojournalism that simply records an event, Mr. Fernandez creates images that distill its essence.

"The top half of "Wall Street, New York City" (1970) is dominated by a fluttering American flag, but the scene beneath Old Glory is one of strenuous conflict as hard-hat construction workers battle police during a demonstration in support of U.S. involvement in the war in Vietnam. The flag is backlit and light glances off the police helmets and the demonstrators' hard hats, charging the image with vitality. Mr. Fernandez shot both pro- and antiwar demonstrations, as well as actions in favor of, and against, the civil-rights movement." (22 Sept 2012, p. A-20)
