CREATURES "Creatures" is a juried exhibition featuring artworks about creatures-real or imagined. All explorations of this theme are invited. Artworks in all media, techniques and styles are encouraged.   EXHIBITION SPACE & DATES  Art Saint Louis Gallery at 1223 Pine Street in downtown St. Louis, MO. Exhibition dates: January 16-February 18, 2016. Free reception on Saturday, January 16, 6-8 p.m     ELIGIBILITY Open to artists 21 years of age and older living in the St. Louis, Missouri region and surrounding 200-mile radius.  DEADLINE The deadline to submit works for this exhibit is October 24, 2015 (11:59 MST). OUR JURORS Heather Woodson and Charles Houska. Heather Woodson is a ceramic sculptor and art educator based in the St. Louis area. Her works have been exhibited nationally & internationally. She has been teaching ceramics and fiber art classes through Chesterfield Arts, now known as Art Unleashed, since 2011, where she previously served as Exhibition Coordinator and Studio Manager. Charlie Houska is an artist and gallery owner based in St. Louis. His whimsical works are featured in collections across the U.S. and he is commissioned regularly for special projects that feature his colorful artworks-from St. Louis Children's Hospital and Harpo Studios to Absolut Vodka-his images can be found in exciting places. ABOUT ART SAINT LOUIS Located on the ground floor of the historic and beautifully renovated Park Pacific building at 1223 Pine Street in downtown St. Louis, Missouri, Art Saint Louis is home to one of the most popular and frequently visited exhibition spaces in the St. Louis region. Created in 2013 and built upon the organization's 31-year success in connecting St. Louis regional artists and audiences, our 2,700 square foot space Gallery boasts a year-round series of professionally juried group exhibitions showcasing the best of the region's contemporary visual art. SPECIFICATIONS   Limit 3 original artworks in all media, styles, themes, and techniques that respond to the theme of the exhibit, "Creatures." Artwork must be completed between 2012-2015. NO ceiling installed work. NO works that sit directly on floor. Sculpture that otherwise would sit on floor must have platform provided by artist that elevates work min. 24" (2') up off of floor. 2-d works must be framed or, if not framed, pre-approved presentation. Paintings may be framed, strip-framed or gallery-wrapped. Size limits: Final installation size not to exceed 6' (72") WIDE or 7' (84") HIGH/TALL, this includes frame. Larger sculptures, oversized 2-d work or installation works must be installed by artist under direction of ASL Artistic Director. 3-d works that are extremely fragile, very small, that have a very small bottom/base, are unstable, or do not sit flat on a pedestal are discouraged. NO works that are nailed, pinned, tacked, taped, velcroed, painted on, glued, adhered, or affixed directly to/on Gallery walls. Art Saint Louis uses traditional hanging hardware (hooks/nails) to hang artworks from their wires on the back of the pieces- however, we will not nail or tack an artwork directly to a wall, nor will we velcro, glue or use any other substance to directly apply an artwork to the wall. ALL works must hang by/from standard picture hanging hardware. No loose plexi that is clipped or nailed to wall. Artist must provide all equipment necessary to present video or artwork requiring electricity, incl. cords, adapters, DVD player, monitor, etc. Works not previously exhibited in any exhibit in Art Saint Louis Gallery. Works not exhibited in any juried exhibit in St. Louis region during 6 months prior to exhibit dates. JURYING & IMAGE REQUIREMENTS  Submitting entries for this show is done online through www.CallForEntry.org. LIMIT: 3 artworks. Limit 2 JPEGs per artwork: 1 full view is required and either 1 detail OR 1 alternate view. IMPORTANT: IF you submit more than 2 images per artwork, the Jurors will NOT be shown your additional images. Any more than 2 images per artwork is not permitted and all additional images will be moved to the "withdrawn" category. Please make sure that the digital images of your artworks are: In focus. Free of any watermarks or name imprint. Free of a time-date stamp. Please do not photograph your artwork framed. If the only image you have of your artwork is of the work framed, crop the frame out of the image.   Upload options for image files: File format: JPEG only. File dimensions: No smaller than 1920 pixels on the longest size. File resolution: 72 ppi/dpi (standard web resolution). File size: 5MB maximum. Upload options for video files: File formats: 3GP, WMV, AVI, MOV, ASF, MPG, MP4, M2T, MKV, M2TS. Resolution: minimum 620x480; max. 1920x1080. Aspect ratio: 4:3 or 16:9. Bit rate: recommended above 240 kbps. Frame rate: minimum 12 fps, recommended 30 fps. The frame rate of the original video should be maintained without re-sampling. In particular, pulldown and other frame-rate re-sampling techniques are strongly discouraged. Codec: h.264, h.263, mpeg-1, mpeg-2, mpeg-4, Windows Media Video, and motion jpeg mpeg-1 muxed, Apple Lossless Container: 3gp, asf, avi, mov, mpeg, mpeg-2, mp4, ogg Video file size: 100 MB maximum. Submissions that do not comply with rules of entry will not be presented to the Jurors. Artworks selected for exhibition that are not accurately depicted by JPEGs may be removed from exhibit at Artistic Director's discretion. For assistance, please contact cafe@westaf.org (during weekday business hours, Mountain Standard Time).   THE JURYING PROCESS The method by which ALL exhibitions are juried at Art Saint Louis is always a fair and blind (anonymous) process. What this means is that at no time before or during the jurying process do our Jurors know the names of entering artists. The Jurors are presented all entrants' JPEGs in an anonymous digital image presentation and the only information provided to them pertains to the artwork and includes the following: artwork title, year, media, dimensions, and method of presentation (displayed on the wall, sits on a pedestal). Jurors are never shown the names of any artists. All artworks that you submit for jurying are presented one after the other in the presentation that the jurors view. So, if you are artist #25, your artworks/entries are in the presentation after artist #24 and before artist #26. From the jurying presentation and information provided about the artworks, the jurors make their selections for the final exhibit. Artwork selection decisions are in part based on a set of specific jurying instructions & criteria relating to the theme of the exhibit as well as specific conditions & rules of the Gallery. For non-thematic exhibitions, a well-rounded exhibit is based on the Jurors' aesthetics along with general exhibition criteria established for all exhibits by Art Saint Louis' Artistic Director. This is a blind process and at no time are the Jurors shown entrants' names, and oftentimes they do not even see names for selected artists until they arrive to the Gallery to view the final exhibit on the Gallery walls. Ours is a fair jurying process.    SALES & INSURANCE All artworks must either have a sale price or be marked Not for Sale (NFS). No works marked POR (price on request) will be accepted. Artist's sale prices listed with original entry submitted for jurying may not be changed after entry deadline (October 21, 2015). All sales are through Art Saint Louis with 30% donation/commission on work sold to ASL and 70% to artist. Sale price includes Art Saint Louis' commission. Artist responsible for delivery of sold work to buyer at end of exhibit. Artworks are insured at 50% of retail value during exhibit. Artist responsible for work in transit to/from ASL.  FRAMING & FINAL PRESENTATION  All work selected for exhibit must be delivered to Gallery ready to install. 2-d work must be framed & equipped with hanging wire stretched across back of artwork. NO sawtooth hangers, clip-style frames or keyhole mounts. French Cleat mounts okay. Paintings may be framed, strip-framed or gallery-wrapped. 2-d works must be framed or, if not framed, pre-approved presentation. NO works that are nailed, pinned, tacked, taped, velcroed, painted on, glued, adhered, or affixed directly to/on Gallery walls. No loose plexi that is clipped or nailed to wall. Oversized, heavy, or installation work must be installed by artist under direction of Artistic Director. Video must be presented on min. 9" monitor; monitor weight not to exceed 20 lbs. Artworks requiring electricity: Artist must provide all cords, adapters, cord protectors & equipment required to present work. Specific installation requirements must be resolved in advance with directions/devices provided by artist. Art Saint Louis reserves the right to install accepted works in a manner deemed necessary for a well-designed exhibition or for security purposes.   AWARDS  Five non-cash Awards of Excellence will be selected by the Juror for this exhibit. Award recipients will be eligible for our "Honor Awards 2017" curated exhibit (Summer 2017).  ENTRY FEE Entry fee is non-refundable. Monochrome images of any subject you choose. Digital, traditional silver gelatin, and alternative process images are all welcome.

Tillman Crane has agreed to jury this exhibition and we're honored to have his enthusiastic eye. He will choose 35 photographs for exhibition in the gallery, and up to 40 additional images for the gallery's Online Annex. All selected  photographs will be reproduced in the exhibition catalog.

About the Juror: Tillman Crane began his career in 1978 as a photojournalist for The Maryville Daily Times. Ten years later, he began to teach his craft. While platinum/
palladium photographs remain his passion, he was quick to integrate digital vocabulary into his practice. As the medium continues to evolve and Tillman along with it, the content of the artist's images has remained constant -- the ordinary, found in the everyday environments that surround him.

Call for Artwork displaying "Passage of Time"

James Taylor once sang the lyrics "The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time." Framations Art Gallery invites artists to explore this concept in their upcoming juried exhibit "Passage of Time". In this exhibit, artists are encouraged to interpret the theme how they choose. Perhaps the focus is on the age of a person, a dilapidated home or other aged structure, a plant past its prime, abandoned objects, etc.

Works in all 2D and 3D mediums are acceptable. The exhibit will be on display July 24 - August 27, 2015. Entries are due to Framations July 17 and 18 from 10-6 and on July 19 from 12-5pm. International Competition for Photographs and Photo-Based Artwork at Umbrella Arts, New York City. Conceived and juried by Harvey Stein, Director of Photography, Umbrella Arts; photographer, educator, author, curator

 

We are seeking photographs of animals that are a bit unusual and out of the ordinary, not the conventionally cute images that are often seen.  The photographs certainly can be amusing, interesting, frank and biting.  

 

We define animal as anything that breathes and is not human.  

The tone can convey an appreciation of the joys and difficulties experienced by animals in the essentially absurd predicament of domestication.   Animals pictured in environments from homes to zoos, from city streets to rural farms, from natural habitats to the ends of the earth, with and without man are all sought.

 

The exhibition is open to all photographers working in color, black & white, film, digital, and beyond, etc.   Any format, any camera, any style is acceptable.

ELIGIBILITY:   The exhibition is open to all photographers, any format, any camera, black & white or color, any style acceptable.  All types of photography-based work may be entered, including digital, iphone, alternative processes, photo collage and montage.  Maximum finished print size is 16”x20”. Maximum frame size is 20”x24”.

 

BOOK PUBLICATION :   A book based on the selected and exhibited images for ANIMAL WORLD will be published by the gallery and will be for sale during the exhibition. All rights remain with the photographer.

JUROR:  HARVEY STEIN is a professional photographer, educator, lecturer, curator and author of seven photography books: Briefly Seen New York Street Life (October,2015), Harlem Steet Portraits (2013), Coney Island 40 Years (2011), Movimento: Glimpses of Italian Street Life (2007), Coney Island (1998), Artists Observed (1986), and Parallels: A Look at Twins (1978). Stein’s photographs have been published in dozens of magazines such as The New Yorker, Time, Life, Esquire, and Smithsonian as well as all the major photo magazines. He has had 80 one-person exhibits in the U.S. and Europe, and his photographs are in more than 55 public and private collections around the world. The Bruce Silverstein Gallery, Throckmorton Fine Art and June Bateman Fine Art represent his work. He is a faculty member of the International Center of Photography and conducts his own workshops in Asia, South America and Europe as well as the U.S. He was appointed Director of Photography at Umbrella Arts in 2009. FEE:    $40.00 submission fee for 5 images. $5.00 per each additional image up to 10 images will be accepted, payable to Umbrella Arts once online registration is completed. Payment can be made by PayPal, check or money order.

 

NOTIFICATION: Artists will be notified by October 6, 2015.  Approximately 40 images will be selected for exhibition.  Notification will be sent by e-mail.

 

ACCEPTED WORK:   A framed, ready to hang, exhibition quality print must be delivered to Umbrella Arts, 317 East 9th Street, New York, New York 10003.

Maximum finished print size is 16”x20”. Maximum frame size is 20”x24”. No substitutes of accepted work will be allowed.  Exhibited work must be for sale.

 

DELIVERY:   Can be made in person or by mail. By Mail --no later than Saturday, October 31st. By Hand -- delivered work can be dropped off at Umbrella Arts on Thursday, October 29th, Friday October 30, and Saturday October 31^st from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM.  Please include a current resume to be included in the gallery exhibition guide.

 

UMBRELLA ARTS: Mary Ann Fahey and Margaret Bodell joined forces to create the Umbrella Arts gallery and project space, located in the heart of the East Village.  Mary Ann Fahey and Margaret Bodell have introduced many new artists to the New York art world, and worked to expand the traditional notion of an art exhibition by using it as a vehicle for creating community and promoting social change.

 

RECEPTION:   A reception for photographers, friends and press, hosted by Umbrella Arts will be held on Thursday November 5th. Time:  6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.  

 

COMMISSION:   Umbrella Arts will handle all sales for photographers. Photographers will retain 50% of sales price, and Umbrella Arts will retain 50% of total sale.  The price indicated on the entry form will be considered the retail price of each image. Once the final exhibition print has been dropped off at the gallery, Umbrella Arts will be happy to consult with artists on pricing considerations.  

 

LIABILITY:   Liability of artwork is the responsibility of the participating artist/photographer.  Umbrella Arts, their employees or any agents thereof cannot be held responsible for any liability of the artist.
