TPS 19: The International Competition

The juror is Katherine Ware, Curator of Photography at the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

She was an adjunct professor for Webster University, where she taught stress management and human resource development classes.

Critical Mass for the Visual Arts is offering four artists $1,000 for their use as creative operating capital along with the opportunity to present their work in a group exhibition or other public presentation. These stipends will be awarded to St. Louis area visual artists in recognition of their outstanding work and commitment to developing their own career. A panel of local artists and curators will be reviewing the submissions.

During these tough times, Critical Mass recognizes the need for artists to continue working and expanding their horizons. The Creative Stimulus Projects build upon the mission of Critical Mass, a self-formed visual art collaborative dedicated to promoting, enhancing and initiating contemporary visual art in the St. Louis region.

Artists may use the non-matching stipends in any way, as long as the funds contribute to the growth of their career. This funding is to be sought by artists wishing to pursue special projects that will broaden their experience, experiment with new techniques or deepen their understanding of their current working process. For example, they may purchase new equipment, rent larger studio space to prepare for an exhibition, or pay for insurance so that a project becomes possible.

Selection Criteria
· Artistic excellence and innovation as evidenced by past work.
· Proposed project activity can be achieved within a 1-year time-line.
· Clarity and creativity of the artist's idea.

This call is open to established and emerging artists who live within a 100-mile radius of St. Louis.

Submission Requirements
1. A letter (2-page maximum) that presents a strong and clear artist statement and explains how you would like to use this stipend to expand, experiment, or explore.
2. A typed resume/CV no longer than 3 pages including current contact information and email address.
3. Up to 10 images of previous works submitted electronically or on CD or DVD. Or, artist may choose to submit 5 images and up to two websites and/or videos (60 second clips only on dvd or submitted electronically).

File Format: Images must be no more than 1920 pixels on the longest side and must be high quality JPG file format at 300 dpi. Do not submit TIFFs, PDFs, Word or any other non-JPG formats.

File Labeling: Files must use a zero in front of single digit numbers. Do not use more than 30 characters; use only letters, numbers and underscores.

Example: 01_Smith; 02_Smith. Mac OS users: Image files must be in JPEG format and include .jpg at the end of each image title. Example: 01_Smith.jpg.

Reporting Requirement
Upon completion of the accepted project year, recipients must provide Critical Mass with a follow-up artist statement/letter so that the organization can track and evaluate how funds are being used. The recipients of the stimulus funds will also participate in a four-person exhibition or other public presentation of their work in early 2011.

CALL FOR STUDENT PAPERS
MOUNTAIN PLAINS MUSEUMS ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE
September 13-17, 2010
Rapid City, South Dakota

We are asking university personnel associated with museum studies or public history programs, as well as university museum staff who offer training/internships for students interested in pursuing museum careers, to encourage students to submit proposals for papers to be presented at the 2010 MPMA Conference in Rapid City. The student session is offered each year and is sponsored by the Committee on Museum Professional Training, the Association of College and University Museums and Galleries, and Emerging Museum Professionals.

Student papers may address research and projects that apply museum method and theory; students should also include a discussion of how this experience contributes to their professional development. This conference session gives students the opportunity to present papers at a regional conference and to meet and visit with professionals in the field.

Senator Kit Bond on campus Friday, 26 MArch 2010

Senator Kit Bond will be visiting campus on Friday, March 26th to speak to students at the Winnie Moore from 2:30 - 3:30.

The subject of his talk will be the use of "Smart Power" in Southeast Asia - a concept he has refined over years of studying Southeast Asia and supporting diplomacy, economic development, the peace corps and student exchange as the optimal means of engagement with this vital component of the Muslim world.

There will be a Q & A session toward the end of the event.

A.D. Coleman and the May Gallery on NPR

A.D. Coleman, Co-curator of China: Insights, currently in the May Gallery, will be a guest on Cityscape on St. Louis Public Radio on Friday, 19 March. The program airs on KWMU 90.7 FM, our local NPR station, at 11 am. Mr. Coleman is expected to be on the air around the second portion of the show.

Be sure to listen, then to come to his talk about the exhibition at 1 pm in Sverdrup room 101, and to the reception in the May Gallery from 5-7 pm.

ENTER THE ANNUAL
JURIED PHOTOGRAPHY SHOW!

Entries for the 2009-2010 Annual Juried Exhibition are now being accepted. All currently enrolled Webster students in all programs worldwide are eligible. Download this Call for Work as a PDF file here.

The exhibition will run in the May Gallery from 2-30 April 2010, with a reception and awards presentation on Friday, 9 April 2010, from 5-7 p.m.

Any work that involves a photographic process is welcomed, but the work should have been produced during the past year, and while a student at Webster. Work may be matted or mounted, or with sufficient border to be hung under glass. (A border of at least 1½ inches is suggested.) Work must be unframed and ready to hang. Outside dimensions should be 8x10", 8½x11", 11x14", 14x17", 13x19", 16x20" or 20x24". Other sizes will only be considered if (a) glass is already available in the May Gallery supply storage, or (b) the student supplies glass for hanging. (Submissions by students from international campuses in metric sizes will be accommodated.) A maximum of four pieces per individual may be submitted. No fees are required.

Deadline for submission is Thursday, 25 March 2010, at 4:30 p.m. Remember, this is a juried show. Work exhibited and awards will be selected by an independent outside jury. There is no guarantee that every piece submitted will be exhibited; enter your very best work.

All work submitted must have student’s name, phone number, email, campus (if not Webster Groves) and title of the piece (if any) legibly written on, or affixed to, the back of each piece. Failure to include this information will disqualify the work from consideration for the show. Work submitted should be protected in a box, case, or suitable envelope with the student's name on the outside of the package.

If you are interested in having your work reproduced in the catalog that accompanies the show, send a file attachment (300 ppi, approximately 4x6 print size) to . It must be the same image as you submit for the exhibition; be sure your name is part of the file name. Only images selected by the jurors will be considered for publication.

Photos not selected for the show may be picked up in the Kirk House beginning Monday, 29 March. Photos in the show may be picked up in the Kirk House beginning Monday, 3 May. Photos not picked up by 1 June 2010 will be discarded. Entries from outside St. Louis will be returned by mail to the campus of origin.

Prizes will be awarded for Best of Show and First, Second and Third Place. In addition, there is a cash purchase award for the Best of Show winner.

Seeing Red: Deadline 22 March 2010

Art Saint Louis is current accepting submissions for our "Seeing Red" exhibition. Deadline for entries: March 22, 2010.

SEEING RED
Works submitted for this juried exhibition should focus on the color red and/or address the theme of "Seeing Red" (i.e. annoyance, anger, and related issues of heated emotions, controlling anger, etc.). Open to all interpretations.

EXHIBITION SPACE & DATES
Art Saint Louis main gallery in downtown St. Louis, Missouri. Exhibition dates: May 10-June 24, 2010.

ELIGIBILITY
Open to artists 21 years of age and older living in the St. Louis, Missouri region or surrounding 200-mile radius. Chicago, IL and Kansas City, MO are not eligible.

SPECIFICATIONS
Artists may submit up to 2 original artworks in all styles & all media*, (*NO ceiling installed work or works that rely on use of Internet for display). Work must be completed in the last two years (2008-2010). Size limits: artwork must fit through standard sized double doors. Final installation size not to exceed 10' high and/or 15' wide.

St. Louis-based artist Philip Hitchcock, sculptor, owner, phd Gallery, St. Louis, MO, and artist Janice Nesser, Assistant Professor of Art, St Louis Community College, Florissant Valley.

JURYING
Judging is done by jpegs on CD only. No slides, e-mailed images, photos, DVD, or video. Limit 2 artworks. Jpegs on ONE (1) CD that MUST be readable by both Mac & PC. Jpegs must be RGB Color and minimum 800x800 pixels and not to exceed 1600 pixels on the longest dimension. 300 dpi is preferred. Title each jpeg file to correspond to entry form using the following format: yourlastname.image1.jpg (i.e. smith.image1.jpg). Do NOT add an extra .jpg extension to the image title. Include separate printed reference sheet with color or b/w thumbnail prints showing each artwork on the CD. Label CD with artist's full name and place CD in protective case for mailing. Submissions that do not comply with rules of entry will not be presented to the juror. Only entries postmarked or hand-delivered by March 22, 2010 will be considered. Works selected for exhibition that are not accurately depicted by jpegs may be removed from the exhibit at Director's discretion.

INSURANCE
Art Saint Louis provides insurance at 50% of retail on all exhibited works. Artist responsible for work in transit to & from ASL.

FRAMING & PRESENTATION
All work selected for exhibition must be ready to install. 2-d work must be framed (or approved alternative) and equipped with hanging wire stretched across back of artwork. Paintings may be gallery-wrapped or strip-framed. NO sawtooth hangers or clip frames. 3-d, oversized or installation works must be installed by artist under direction of ASL Gallery Director. Specific installation requirements must be resolved in advance with directions/devices provided by artist. Art Saint Louis reserves the right to install accepted works in a manner deemed necessary for a well-designed exhibition or for security purposes.

AWARDS & SALES
Five non-cash Awards of Excellence will be selected by the jurors for this exhibit. Award recipients will be eligible for our curated "Honor Awards 2011" exhibit (March-April).

TRAVELING PORTION
At the conclusion of the Art Saint Louis Gallery presentation of Seeing Red, portions of the exhibit will be selected to travel to two St. Louis area locations July-August 2010: Third Degree Glass Factory, St. Louis, MO, and St. Louis County Library,, Sachs Branch Chesterfield, MO, through Chesterfield Arts. Only artists whose works are juried into the ASL Gallery presentation will be eligible to have their work curated for travel. Please note on your entry form, if selected for this show, whether or not you would like to have your work considered for travel. Delivery of artwork to/from all locations is artist's responsibility.

Entry fee is non-refundable. $20/current Art Saint Louis members; $30/non-members; $5 reduced entry fee with new $50 Artist level membership (membership forms available on our website). Payable to Art Saint Louis. Submit fee with entry form, CD, image reference sheet, & SASE for return of CD.
