JACK'S ART SHOW: CALL FOR ENTRIES

Jack the Ripper cordially invites you to submit artwork for his 120th Anniversary Art Show and Party. He is looking for art in all media and styles. Don't limit your thinking to just pumpkins and black cats. Jack is open to anything that's dark, moody, surreal, goth, weird, strange, bizarre, unusual, darkly humorous, or fitting in any way for a Halloween show.

Jack's Halloween Art Show and Party is a one night event. In addition to fantastic art, there will be food, entertainment and a cash bar. We are also encouraging people to come in costume. It is a Halloween party after all. Here's the show details:

Please read and follow all instructions carefully. Jack is a stickler for details and you don't want to make him mad, trust me! He also recommends that you read over the Waiver Form, the Drop-off rules and the Show Description on the website so there are no surprises. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: Deadline for submissions is October 1, 2008.

• Each artist may submit up to 4 pieces.
• All submitted images must be jpegs. Send all entries in one email if possible to jacksartshow@gmail.com. The files should not be bigger than 500kb.
• Files names should have the last name of the artist and then the name of the piece, for example: williams_mynightmare.jpg
• Only one image will be needed for flat art. You may send two shots of 3-D work if needed.
• Your email should also include the following info: Your name, address, phone number, email. We also need the number of pieces submitted, name of each piece, medium, size and price.
• There is no cost just to submit. If your work is accepted, there will be a $20 entry fee (per artist, not per piece). Payable in cash only at time of drop-off.
• All accepted art must be ready for proper display. This means flat art should be framed with a wire across the back. No sawtooth hangers or other forms of hanging will be accepted...period! We are not going to pin or tape-up work either. If your work is three-dimensional and requires a base or pedestal, you will need to provide this yourself.
• Any work deemed too difficult to install will not be accepted. For example, we cannot suspend work from the ceiling.
• All accepted work will need to be dropped off and picked up in person on the designated dates. We cannot accept shipped artwork.
• Jack will not handle art sales and will not take any commissions. Each artist is responsible for handling their own sales and they will keep whatever they make. We will make every effort to connect interested buyers with the artist. If the event is crowded, this may be tricky. We will at least take down buyer info to pass along to the artist as soon as possible.
• You will be notified by email or phone no later than October 5, 2008 about any accepted works.
  

ASMP competition: Deadline 15 August 2008

If you are a student ASMP member, you are invited to submit your fine art images to ASMP’s Close-Up competition. ­ The details are at http://www.asmp.org/closeup08.

Close-Up is sponsored by the New York chapter of ASMP. Only ASMP members are eligible to enter, and every member is allowed to enter the first image free. There is a modest fee to enter additional images, if you so desire. The winning images will be exhibited this fall at Calumet’s gallery in New York City. Don’t wait. The contest closes on August 15.

The exhibition, Close-Up, considers the question of how we become subjects and how that process might be revealed in photography by drawing from Emmanuel Levinas’ book, Existents and Existence.

Does photography’s fracturing of time, space and narrative provide some of the basic principles of this particular set of thoughts? Does Photography create its own philosophy through its format?

According to Levinas, art allows us to step back and see things in a different context. Referring to photography, film and in particular to close-ups:

’Their interest does not only lie in that they can show details; they stop the action in which a particular is bound up with a whole, and let it exist apart. They let it manifest its particular and absurd nature which the camera discovers in a normally unexpected perspective — in a shoulder line to which the close-up gives the hallucinatory dimensions, laying bare what the visible universe and the play of its normal proportions tone down and conceal.’

By hinting at unexpected perspectives and cinematic characteristics, the photographer’s work may yield far more complicated questions than they answer. The exhibition becomes a voyage through the contested spaces: philosophy, photography, genre and method.

Juror Nina Trivedi is a London based performance artist and curator. Currently pursuing an MFA in Curating at Goldsmiths College. Previous projects include Photo 50 for the London Art Fair, Bad Year Blimp at Alma Enterprises and Parallel Lines with the Glasgow School of Art.

Communications Internship Scholarship: Deadline 1 September 2008

The Press Club of Metropolitan St. Louis is offering a Communications Internship Scholarship

The Press Club is now accepting applications for its fall 2008 internship scholarships. Eligible students will receive $1,000 scholarships.

Sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible. Communication majors attending universities in the St.Louis metropolitan region are eligible.

The Soulard Art Market and Contemporary Art Gallery is calling for submissions to "Lunatic Fringe" a juried exhibition of artists that represents extreme, eccentric, or fanatical views...what does lunatic fringe mean to you?

The Exhibition runs from September 11th, 2008 through October 5th, 2008.

We are looking to represent over 30 artists in our Contemporary Art Gallery, exhibiting with our 14 resident artists.

Submission Guidelines:

• Submission is FREE!
• Each artist may submit up to three original works for consideration.
• We are looking for all forms of art, styles and points of view of what "Lunatic Fringe" means to you. FOR EXAMPLE: Some work may have representation of a political movement, or a happy moment, whereas some may represent a deep seeded painful memory that they wish they had forgotten. What does Lunatic Fringe mean to you?
• 2D work should be no larger than 4ft x 4ft in total. Must be framed and ready for hanging.
• All artwork for consideration must be submitted via JPEG/JPG image.An accompanying e-mail must include title/ media/measurements, contact e-mail address,and phone number.
• File size for each work cannot exceed 500kb, JPEG Files should be named as such: Artists Name_Name of Piece_Dimensions.jpg (John Smith_Artwork1_16x20.jpg)

Accepted artists will be contacted by September 4th & 5th and promotional postcards will be available for collection from the

There will be no commission; artists will retain 100% of sales.
