Digital Photo Pro Emerging Professional Photo Contest: Deadline 23 February 2007

Open to students who are currently enrolled in a photography course at an accredited college or university or to professional photographers with up to three years of professional experience. All entries must be optimized on a computer running Microsoft Windows and submitted on a CD as a Photoshop .PSD file along with separate print(s) of the original photo submission(s) using an Epson printer and Epson ink.

Three categories include Fashion/Beauty; Fine Art; Photojournalism.

Grand Prize Winner Package: Cash Prize of $10,000; Epson Stylus Pro 4800 printer; Dell Computer; and Winning image may be featured in the “First Takes” and “Wrap-Up” sections of Digital Photo Pro Magazine in the May/June 2007 issue. It may also be showcased in the Digital Photo Pro online gallery. Approximate Retail Value (“ARV”) of Grand Prize Winner Package: $15,000.

Two (2) Runner-Up Winner Packages: Cash Prize of $1,000; and Winning Runner-Up image may be featured in the “Wrap-Up” section of Digital Photo Pro Magazine in the May/June 2007 issue. It may also be showcased in the Digital Photo Pro online gallery. ARV of each Runner-Up Winner Package: $4,500.

Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar

The Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar was founded in 1973 by a group of photojournalists representing newspapers, magazines and wire services. Its reason for being is to promote the highest standards of photojournalism through an annual educational conference and a photography contest judged by working photographers. It is a non-profit organization.

The 2006 Seminar will be held December 1st and 2nd.
Contest deadline and early registration is November 13.

Alexia Foundation grants and scholarships: applications accepted beginning 1 December 2006

Each year in February, the Alexia Foundation provides a $15,000 grant to a professional photographer and five scholarships of varying values to students to study photography at the Syracuse University London Centre in England. The first place student winner also receives a $1000 cash grant and the other four receive $500 cash grants, in addition to the scholarships. Entrepreneurship Certificate for Photo Majors

To develop individuals who are capable of identifying opportunities in today’s challenging business environment and are prepared to assume the efforts and risks associated with bring these opportunities to reality.

Overview:
The Certificate in Entrepreneurship consists of a series of stimulating Entrepreneurship courses for undergraduate business and non-business majors. Courses in the Certificate will promote entrepreneurial thinking among students and develop the necessary real-world skills for founding and growing of an entrepreneurial venture. Students will demonstrate these skills by developing and presenting a viable business plan at the end of the Certificate curriculum.

The 18-credit hour Certificate is comprised of six courses. All of these courses allow students to focus course projects on their individual business concept. Students completing the program will be awarded a Certificate in Entrepreneurship from the School of Business and Technology.

Can a Photo Tell the Truth?: Monday, 30 October 2006

Years ago, no one thought much about whether or not photographs really "told the truth." Several widely publicized incidents have changed that in recent years, though. We'll look at how altered photographs have misreported the news, and how the standards for what is ethically permissible to do to a photograph have changed.

In Honor of Berenice Abbott
Berenice Abbott was a photographer of great accomplishment. Known mostly for her documentary work of New York City in the 1930s, Berenice was also a portrait photographer, an educator, an inventor, and a writer. She believed that all photographers should have personal projects that they are passionate about, no matter what the subject matter. This award is in her honor. It is meant for someone who has completed a body of work, whether that is a special project or a portfolio of your best work. (Berenice was a master printer. This contest is also in honor of beautifully printed work.)

The 2006 contest offered over US$112,000 in prizes donated by over 94 generous sponsors, the competition is open to students everywhere, of all ages, and to their teachers.

College students and teachers compete in both single images and portfolios. Prizes will be awarded in each category at the Grand, First, Second and Third Prize levels and to the schools of the Grand Prize winners. Every entrant receives a Certificate of Achievement.

The top 100-120 photographs will be exhibited at the PMA Imaging 2006 Convention in Orlando, FL USA in February 26 - March 1, 2006. Two 2006 PIEA International Traveling Photo Exhibitions will tour major conventions, schools, colleges and museums for two years in the USA, Australia and Canada. The top prize-winning images were published in Photo Marketing Magazine. Winners were also posted on the World Wide Web on the PIEA Home Page Gallery.
