Call for Work: Deadline 1 August 2008

Misery in Missouri” Art Exhibit Brings Visual Education in Puppy Mills

The Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation has released a Call to Artists for its “Misery in Missouri” art exhibit. The goal of the exhibit is to shed light on the Missouri puppy mill problem through a visual means.

Missouri has earned a reputation as the “Puppy Mill Capitol of the Midwest” due to its many, filthy, overcrowded, and poorly regulated pet breeding locations where animals suffer a miserable existence. Over 90% of all dogs sold by pet shops come from puppy mills. Despite the proliferation of these facilities, Missouri’s Department of Agriculture has failed to diligently control this problem. According to the state audit, state inspectors reviewed only 27% of the facilities that the law required them to inspect in 2004.

“Misery in Missouri” was created to follow up on our very successful Puppies Are Biodegradable art exhibit held in April 2008. Artists are encouraged to submit their artwork through the beginning of August 2008. Full submission guidelines are outlined in the Call to Artists found at www.maal.org. Artwork from the “Misery in Missouri” exhibit will be for sale at events around Missouri.

The Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation is a non-profit lobbying organization founded in 1990 to bring about protection for animals through legislative means and is the only such organization lobbying exclusively for animal welfare issues in Missouri. The group was instrumental in passing the Animal Care Facilities Act of 1992 and the citizen’s ballot initiative that outlawed cockfighting in Missouri in 1998. The Alliance works with other humane organizations, agencies and individuals across the state toward enactment and strengthening of animal welfare laws.
