Photojournalism Grants: Deadline 15 November 2018

Fund Your Work: Upcoming Photojournalism Grant and Fellowship Deadlines

The application deadlines for two great funding and educational opportunities are quickly approaching. Magnum Foundation’s Photography and Social Justice Program supports early-career photographers “who are passionate about challenging injustice, pursuing social equality, and advancing human rights through photography,” the Foundation says in its description of the program. “This program especially aims to support people of color, women, gender non-conforming individuals, LGBTQ individuals, individuals who are part of racial, ethnic, or religious minority groups, and others whose authorship is unevenly represented within the field of documentary photography.”
The fellows receive a small stipend to help them create a project in their home communities with guidance from Magnum Foundation mentors. They also travel to New York for classes organized in partnership with City University of New York’s Graduate School of Journalism, with expenses covered by Magnum Foundation. Applications for the fellowship are due by October 1, 2018, and are being reviewed on a rolling basis.
Former fellows include Sim Chi Yin, Boniface Mwangi and Taslima Akhter.
Earlier this week at at Visa pour l‘Image international festival of photojournalism, Reuters announced the second round of its $5,000 photojournalism grants, which seek to support “a diverse new generation of young photojournalists” in the production of “photo assignments and projects that will advance the recipients’ experience, skills and ability to tell new stories.”
Yannis Behrakis, Reuters photojournalist and senior editor, special projects will mentor grant recipients as they undertake their projects, then Reuters will distribute the work they produce.
Eight photographers—including Ekaterina Anchevskaya, Daro Sulakauri, Loren Elliot and Thomas Nicolon—received grants during the first round of funding.
