We are happy to announce that we are now recruiting students to apply for our 2018 Summer Academy, a component of the Mellon Undergraduate Curatorial Fellowship, to be scheduledin late May or early June. Students selected to participate in the Summer Academy will be eligible to apply for a 2-year Fellowship (September 2018–August 2020) at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

The Summer Academy offers an exciting opportunity for your students.  Fifteen undergraduate students will be selected to attend the week-long immersion program designed to provide a broad overview of the work we do in the museum.  Through tours, workshops, group and individual projects, and discussions in the museum, the participants will gain first-hand knowledge of curating and other museum careers.  A small stipend and accommodations for the week are provide for the participants.

Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

1.       Individuals from ethnic and racial groups underrepresented in the curatorial field (any person of color);
2.       Undergraduates currently enrolled at a university, college, or community college in the Kansas City region (Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, and Arkansas);
3.       Undergraduates who, if selected as a fellow, can commit to two years in the program with plans to graduate no earlier than May 2020;

4.       Individuals who are eligible to work in the United States;

5.       Individuals who have a strong interest in Art History, History, Anthropology, Archaeology, Museum Studies, or other cultural studies programs are preferred.

Following the Summer Academy, the 15 participants are eligible to apply for one of the two 2018–20 Fellowships.  The Fellowship requires a two-year commitment and provides a stipend totaling $10,000 each year.  Each year, the Fellow will receive sustained mentoring by a curator, engage with the museum during the academic year, and participate in a 10-week, full-time hands-on museum experience in the summer.

Through the generosity of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the grant for the Mellon Undergraduate Curatorial Fellowship program was recently renewed and is funded through 2022.  The Nelson-Atkins is proud to offer this competitive Fellowship in partnership with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the High Museum in Atlanta, and The Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Online applications accepted beginning November 1, 2017.  Application found here:  https://nelson-atkins.org/careers-internships/
