CALL FOR ENTRIES
Exhibit: February 2-March 4, 2017
Entry Deadline: Monday
December 5, 2016
International Competition for Photographs and Photo-Based Artwork
at Umbrella Arts, New York City
Conceived and juried by Harvey Stein, Director of Photography,
Umbrella Arts; photographer, educator, author, curator
We are seeking photographs of FAMILY.
Photographs that are a bit unusual and out of the ordinary, not the
conventionally nice or cute images that are often seen. Your photographs
can be amusing, interesting, frank and biting.
Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines FAMILY as a group of people who are related to each other. This is
fine with us but we’d like to expand the definition beyond what we are born
into. Let’s include those who we choose to “adopt” as a family, like a close group
of friends; a group of people united by certain convictions and a common
affiliation, and a group of things related by common characteristics, as the
woodwind family of musical instruments, for instance. A group of circus
performers, a band of brothers, a theater group, or even the Mafia.
The tone can convey an appreciation of the joys and difficulties experienced by FAMILY in the essentially absurd predicament of getting along and living. FAMILIES pictured in environments from homes to city streets to the ends of the earth are all being sought.
The exhibition is open to all photographers working in color,
black & white, film, digital, and beyond, etc. Any format, any
camera, any style is acceptable.
Happy or unhappy, families are all mysterious.
We have only to imagine how differently we would be described - and will be,
after our deaths - by each of the family members who believe they know us.
-Gloria Steinem
