THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

JUROR:  Brian Vanden Brink
DEADLINE:  Monday, September 8, 2014

Whether a factory, a hot dog stand, a Gothic cathedral, a home, a fence, or a constructed landscape, humans build because building is necessary. We build to make our mark, lay claim, celebrate, defend, control, shelter.

Built environments offer limitless opportunity to develop our photographic craft.  We have countless ways to interpret shape and form, mass and volume, directionals and perspectives, rhythm and repetition, color, texture and design. Add the effects of natural and/or artificial light, and the image possibilities are endless.

Photographic interpretations of the built environment have continually evolved since the origins of the medium.  How does your work contribute to the breadth of approach we find in the evolution of this photographic genre?

About the juror

We are very pleased that architectural photographer Brian Vanden Brink has agreed to jury this exhibition. Brian has been photographing award-winning architecture for three decades, with five books of his work in print. He will choose forty photographs for exhibition in the gallery, and an additional 35 for the gallery's Online Annex.  All 75 photographs will be reproduced in an exhibition catalog available for purchase from Blurb books.

More here.

DETAILS ON SUBMITTING YOUR WORK:

The submission fee is $30 for five photos, $7 each additional photo.

To help artists defray costs and to encourage submissions from distant photographers, PhotoPlace Gallery offers to mat and frame work selected for exhibition free of charge, providing artists print their images to our pre-cut mat and frame sizes or request a custom mat size. We can also print your images at moderate additional cost.

All selected work will be included in an exhibition catalog, available for purchase.
