"S p r u n g"

Artists are invited to submit three works each in any medium or mixed media for exhibit at the Sprung show, opening April 13 at Art Coop. Sprung will feature 33 artists as we're all sprung into spring.

For works submitted to be hung on the wall, each artist is generally limited to approximately 6' feet of horizontal wall space for the three works. Exceptions will be made for large works where necessary. For large sculpture, freestanding installations or performance art, floor to 16' ceiling space will be available as required by the work.

Art Coop charges no gallery commission on sales of your work, but there is a $25 entry fee per artist (not per work), payable on installation of your work. Exhibition is limited to the first 33 artists accepted.

Deadline for received submissions is April 2nd. But don't delay submitting. Submissions will be reviewed as received and accepted or rejected only until we have 33 artists accepted. 12 artist slots are already filled.

Preferred submission is by emailing JPEGs of your work to artcoopstl@hotmail.com or give us a website address where we can see your work.

Alternatively, slides may be snail mailed to: Art Coop, 2400 South Jefferson, St. Louis, MO 63104. They cannot be returned unless a postage paid self-addressed envelope is included.

In either case, please include the dimensions of the works you are submitting for review

If you exhibited at Art Coop during the early days on Washington Avenue, feel welcome to call or email me and we probably won't need to see your current work before accepting you for this show.

For installations or performance work, a written description by email is acceptable. Diagrams, drawings or photos of the proposed work or previous work by you would be helpful.

Call for Work : Final Deadline 1 June 2007

Call for artists for exhibition at The Gallery at Regional Arts Commission:
Speak Up St. Louis - American Democracy Project Redux

"Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty." -- Wendell Phillips, (1811-1884), abolitionist, orator and columnist for The Liberator, in a speech before the Massachusetts Antislavery Society in 1852.

The University of Central Missouri hosted a show last year asking artists to raise their voices about the issues that impacted them and their lives, which they were passionate about, that they were willing to make a work of art about. More than 100 artists from across the US
responded including 10 from the STL. They talked about war, Iraq, oil, greed, capitalism, lack of leadership, abuse of women, racism, immigration, the environment and more. There is a link below to a website that documents that project.

This year The Gallery at the Regional Arts Commission will host an exhibit that also asks artists to collectively voice their opinions about the issues that are still with us, that have not yet begun to change.

The show will run July 20 to August 26, 2007 at RAC. We are looking for visual artists, writers, musicians, actors or dancers from the St. Louis metropolitan area that are willing to step up, to say what is on their minds and in their hearts about the things that are impacting all of us. Got Voice? Got a project that involves a neighborhood or entire community? We would like to hear from you.

I am serving as the conduit/curator for the project. If interested please email me at this address: mcrane01@gmail.com

Who am I? I live in STL, work in Warrensburg. Many years as director, curator. Principle research is pragmatic tradition—art that seeks to instruct or show the way: socially, politically, spiritually.

Technology has blurred the line between the photograph as a document of some sort of reality and a pure work
of art. The trend is to make photographs that go beyond the modernist ideas, which were fine art representations of reality seen in the work by Alfred Stieglitz or Edward Steichen. Even beyond post-modernism, photographs depicted a degraded reality influenced by popular culture such as in the work of Cindy Sherman or Richard Prince. Photographers are now turning to more idiosyncratic modes of working, expressing dissatisfaction with the limitations of making and displaying photographs. Technology has enabled art photography to develop a new pictorial style and vocabulary. Computers are making unprecedented aesthetic experiences possible by revolutionizing the way that art is conceived, created and perceived. Given all of these exciting developments, the photograph is still seen as a document. Any alterations are approached cynically, even changes created as a matter of course in the digital darkroom. The aim of this discussion is to de-mystify these new methods and address and explore the various ways by which art photography is expressed today.

Seating is limited; RSVP to 314.241.1299
Program will start promptly at 6:30 pm. Join us afterwards for a glass of wine!
